Krabi is the province on the screensaver, and the list of things to do in Krabi is the one every Ao Nang tour desk has laminated: four islands, Hong Island, Phi Phi, the Emerald Pool, an elephant. Half of it is genuinely good; the other half is a queue with a buffet attached, sold for the hour when the good half is at its worst.
The short version: sleep a night on Railay, do one island day by longtail rather than speedboat, kayak Ao Thalane, climb Tiger Cave Temple’s 1,260 steps before the heat, and give Krabi Town an evening. Skip the midday shuttles and anything with an elephant on a chain. Every entry ends with a verdict and an October 2026 price, because the province dual-prices its parks.
Where you sleep is settled in where to stay in Krabi, getting down from the capital in Bangkok to Krabi, the map and seasons on the Krabi province page.
How Krabi is laid out, and how this list works
There are four Krabis. Krabi Town is the capital: a river, a pier, the night markets, no beach. Ao Nang, 20 kilometres west, is the resort strip and the longtail harbour where every boat trip starts. Railay is the scenery: a boat-only peninsula with Phra Nang Beach at the tip. Klong Muang and Tubkaek, fifteen minutes north, are the quiet beaches where the five-stars went. Offshore, the Four Islands and Hong Island are day trips; Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are trips of their own.
Each entry ends with a verdict — Do it, Fine or Skip it — and the foreigner price, because the parks charge five to ten times the Thai rate. Prices are October 2026, checked against our Thailand Price Index; estimates say “around”. Nothing was comped. Hotels: compare Krabi rates on Agoda once you have an area.
Things to do in Krabi on the water
1. Railay and Phra Nang Beach
Ten minutes by longtail from the east end of Ao Nang: no roads, cliffs on every side. Railay West is the sunset, Railay East the cheap beds, Phra Nang the best beach in the province. Come before 9am or stay the night; from 11am to 3pm it hosts every speedboat on the coast. Details in our Railay guide; if money is a rumour, Rayavadee (from around ฿20,000) has the cape to itself.
Verdict: Do it, early or overnight. Longtail ฿100 by day, ฿150 after 6pm.
2. The Four Islands by longtail
Poda, Tup, Chicken Island and Phra Nang on a half-day loop. It disappoints because of the hour, not the islands — by noon Tup is a car park of bows. Shared longtail ฿650–900; speedboat ฿800–1,200; a private longtail at 8am, ฿2,500–4,000 for the boat, is the version in the photograph. The ฿200 park fee is cash on the islands; some counters quote ฿400, the Phi Phi rate. Compare Four Islands longtail departures; take the earliest.
Verdict: Do it, early. ฿650–900 plus ฿200 park fee.
3. Hong Island and the lagoon
The better boat day. Koh Hong, north of Ao Nang, has a long white beach, a lagoon entered through a gap in the rock that turns milk-green at high tide, and a stairway of around 400 steps to a viewpoint. Fewer boats, better snorkelling. Longtail or speedboat ฿1,200–1,800 with lunch; the ฿300 park fee is cash at the ranger hut. Compare Hong Island trips.
Verdict: Do it; with one boat day, this one. ฿1,200–1,800 plus ฿300.
4. The Phi Phi day trip from Ao Nang
The speedboat leaves around 8.30am, reaches Phi Phi Leh at the busiest hour, queues you into Maya Bay for its rationed, no-swimming minutes and has you home by five. ฿1,700–2,500 plus the ฿400 park fee. Phi Phi Leh at 7am is the point, and this boat cannot get you there for it. If a day is all you have, compare early-departure Phi Phi trips from Krabi; otherwise read is Koh Phi Phi worth it and stay a night.
Verdict: Fine, if you must; better as two nights. ฿1,700–2,500 plus ฿400.
5. Kayaking the mangroves at Ao Thalane
Half an hour north of Ao Nang, Ao Thalane is mangrove channels between limestone walls, and a kayak is the only sensible way in: two hours under overhangs and into a canyon, past macaques and kingfishers. The cheapest good thing in the province, and the one for a wet-season afternoon. Half-day trips with Ao Nang pickup ฿850–1,000, lunch about ฿200 more. Compare Ao Thalane kayak trips.
Verdict: Do it. Around ฿850–1,000 with transfer.

Things to do in Krabi on land
6. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua)
A forest monastery eight kilometres from Krabi Town: a cave shrine at the bottom, a gold Buddha on the summit, 1,260 concrete steps between them. Forty minutes up, and a full-circle view over the karst plain. Go at 7am; by ten the steps are an oven and the macaques are awake. Cover shoulders and knees. Free with a donation box; a Grab from town is around ฿150–250.
Verdict: Do it, at 7am. Free; Grab ฿150–250.
7. The Emerald Pool and the Klong Thom hot springs
An hour south-east of Ao Nang: a spring-fed forest pool precisely the colour of its name, and ten minutes away a hot stream spilling over rock ledges into a cool river. Both are dual-priced: ฿200 at the Emerald Pool, ฿200 at the hot-spring waterfall. By late morning it is a swimming lesson for three coachloads; go at opening. A combined half-day tour is around ฿1,000–1,500. Compare Emerald Pool and hot-spring tours.
Verdict: Do it, with a caveat — 11am. ฿200 plus ฿200; tours around ฿1,000–1,500.
8. Khao Ngon Nak, the Dragon Crest hike
The province’s proper walk: 3.7 kilometres and 500 metres of climb from a trailhead behind Tubkaek beach to a rock ledge hanging over the bay. Two to three hours up, ropes on the steep bits. It is national park, so ฿200 for foreigners, gates 8am to 6pm, last entry 2pm, and the rangers close it after heavy rain — check first. Water, real shoes, 8am.
Verdict: Do it if you hike. ฿200 park fee.
9. Rock climbing at Railay and Tonsai
Railay’s cliffs are one of the best-known limestone climbing areas on earth: several hundred bolted routes and schools that have put beginners on rock for thirty years. Half-day introductory course ฿1,000–1,500, full day ฿1,800–2,500; deep-water soloing is ฿1,500–2,000 by boat. Compare Railay climbing courses by group size.
Verdict: Do it, even if you never have. ฿1,000–1,500 for a half day.

Quieter things to do in Krabi
10. Klong Muang and Tubkaek beaches
Ao Nang is not a swimming beach; these two, fifteen minutes north, are. Klong Muang is long and calm, with family resorts; Tubkaek, at the road’s end, is quieter and faces Hong Island, where the sunsets go. Neither has a strip: dinner is the hotel or a ฿300–500 Grab from Ao Nang. Beds: The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort (from around ฿5,500) is the small, grown-up one; Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (from around ฿30,000) is the cove.
Verdict: Do it, for the swim. Free; around ฿300–500 by taxi.
11. Koh Klang, the island across the river
Across the river from Chao Fah pier is Koh Klang: a Muslim island of a few thousand people, rice paddies, boat-builders and not a bar on it. The public longtail is ฿10–20 and ten minutes; on the far side hire a bicycle, a motorbike sidecar or a community guide for a half-day. Organised half-days run around ฿1,500–3,000 with lunch. Dress modestly; skip the beer. Compare Koh Klang community tours.
Verdict: Do it, for a half day. ฿10–20 by public boat.
12. Krabi Town’s night markets
Krabi Town is where the province eats. The Chao Fah pier night market runs nightly from about 5pm, and the Walking Street on Soi Maharaj 8 runs Friday to Sunday, 5pm to 10pm. Plates ฿40–80 against ฿100-plus on the Ao Nang beach road; our southern Thai food guide tells you what to point at. The songthaew from Ao Nang is ฿50–60 and thins out after dark; budget ฿300–500 for a Grab home.
Verdict: Do it, Friday or Saturday. Plates ฿40–80; songthaew ฿50–60 each way.
13. An elephant sanctuary that passes the test
Most Ao Nang “elephant mornings” are riding camps that took the saddles off and added the word “sanctuary”. The test in our ethical elephant sanctuaries guide is who decides the contact: no riding, no bathing queue, no hooks, elephants that walk away. The one our guide vouches for in the province is Following Giants on Koh Lanta; for mainland venues, apply the test. Expect ฿1,800–2,500 for a half day. Compare observation-only elephant visits from Krabi.
Verdict: Do it, only where the elephant can leave. ฿1,800–2,500 for a half day.
14. Ao Nang itself
The base town: one beach road of restaurants, dive shops and 7-Elevens, ending at the longtail pier that takes you everywhere better. The beach is fine for a sunset walk, poor for a swim, and the view from it is the entire Andaman. Convenient rather than beautiful; a beach-road beer is ฿80–120. Worth the walk: the Monkey Trail boardwalk to Pai Plong, the calm cove below Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi (from around ฿7,500).
Verdict: Fine — a base, not a beach. Beer ฿80–120; the Railay boat ฿100.

Skip it, or sidestep it
15. The Shell Cemetery, the midday shuttle and the ride-and-bathe camps
Susan Hoi, near Ao Nam Mao, is a shelf of fossilised snail shells and, in person, a slab of grey rock beside a car park, at the park rate of around ฿200 for eleven minutes. The 11-to-3 Railay shuttle delivers you for precisely its worst hours; take the first boat. And the elephant camps: riding means an animal trained to be ridden, a bathing queue is a show with buckets, and a chain between customers is your answer.
Verdict: Skip it. Around ฿200, ฿150 and ฿2,000 you keep.

Getting around Krabi
Songthaews. The white songthaews between Krabi Town and Ao Nang are the public transport: ฿50–60 a head, every 15–20 minutes by day, quiet after dark. Scooters are ฿250–300 a day, but Thai law wants a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit, the checkpoint looks, and the ฿500–1,000 fine is the cheap part — without the paperwork your insurance will not pay for the hospital. Grab works and needs data: ten minutes in our SIM and eSIM guide.
From the airport, the shared van is ฿150 to Ao Nang, ฿100 to Krabi Town, a taxi ฿600–700 — Krabi Airport to Ao Nang on 12Go. The longtail counters are fixed-price; the man on the sand quoting double is not (see our scams guide). Onward: Krabi to Phi Phi ฿450–600, Krabi to Koh Lanta ฿350–500 (detail in how to get to Koh Lanta), Krabi to Phuket by bus ฿200–350. Parks, boats and markets are cash only; every ATM takes the ฿220 fee.
When to go to Krabi
November to April: flat seas, every boat running; December to February is peak and rooms double (see November and December). May to October is the green season — rooms 30–45 per cent cheaper, the mainland mostly fine — and the months the Marine Department cancels island boats on rough days. Maya Bay shuts 1 August to 30 September; the mainland list carries on. Coast by coast in best time to visit Thailand; holiday dates in the festivals calendar; official events on the Tourism Authority’s Krabi page.
Things to do in Krabi: your questions, answered
How many days do you need in Krabi?
Four nights: one island day, a night on Railay, the Ao Thalane kayak, and the temple-and-pool day or the Dragon Crest hike, with Krabi Town for an evening. Add two for Koh Lanta or a climbing course, three if Phi Phi is on the list.
What is the best thing to do in Krabi if you only have one day?
Take the first longtail to Railay, walk to Phra Nang before the boats arrive, climb the viewpoint and kayak the headlands in the afternoon: ฿100 each way plus ฿200 for the kayak, and it beats any ฿1,500 speedboat itinerary. If it must be islands, a private 8am longtail round the Four Islands.
Is Krabi worth visiting in the rainy season?
Yes, with adjusted expectations. May to October brings afternoon storms, cancelled island trips and a wet Railay landing, but also rooms 30–45 per cent cheaper and empty beaches between showers. Build the week around the mainland and treat a boat day as a bonus.
Which is better, the Four Islands tour or Hong Island?
Hong Island: fewer boats, better snorkelling, a lagoon and a viewpoint, for ฿1,200–1,800 plus a ฿300 park fee. The Four Islands is cheaper — ฿650–900 plus ฿200 — and closer, excellent at 8am on a private longtail and a floating traffic jam at noon. Two boat days, do both; one, Hong.
Do you need a scooter to get around Krabi?
No. The ฿50–60 songthaew links Ao Nang and Krabi Town, every tour includes hotel pickup, Grab fills the gaps and Railay has no roads. A scooter helps for Tubkaek, the temple and the springs, but ride only with a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit.
