Thailand in December is the month the brochures were photographed in and the month the invoices are written for. The north wakes at 12°C under a clean sky, the Andaman goes flat and glassy, Bangkok drops to a merely warm 32°C, and every hotel in the country knows it. A ฿1,500 October room is around ฿2,200 by the second week of December and whatever the owner likes from Christmas Eve to 2 January. Here is the planning version: weather, holidays, what is on, what it costs, and where to dodge the queue.
The short version: December is the best all-round month for the north and the Andaman and the worst value of the year for both; the Gulf islands are still drying out until roughly the 15th. Three public holidays and a substitution day (5, 7, 10 and 31 December), none of which bans alcohol; Christmas is not a holiday, however hard the malls try. Prices step up 30–50 percent from the green season and again from 24 December to 2 January. Dates are from our festival and holiday calendar, baht from the Price Index, the month-by-month from best time to visit Thailand; “around” marks our estimates. The month before is in Thailand in November.
Thailand in December at a glance: the region-by-region table
Figures are rounded from the Thai Meteorological Department’s 1991–2020 normals (the TMD has the live forecasts); crowds and verdicts are ours. Peak is not evenly spread: the first week is busy but sane, Christmas Eve to 2 January is the most expensive and crowded stretch of the year, and the week after is quiet while everyone flies home broke.
| Region | December normals | Sea | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok and the central plains | 32°C days, 23°C nights, ~12mm rain | River-cruise weather | Heavy at Christmas and New Year | Do it. The one month the city is walkable |
| North (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, Nan) | 29°C days, 17°C nights; 8–12°C dawns in the hills | Rivers clear, no smoke | Chiang Mai busy; Pai rammed at New Year | Worth it. Book Chiang Mai by October |
| Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta, Lipe) | 32°C, ~82mm over 7–8 days | Flat, clear; every boat runs | Peak; Christmas week busiest | Do it, at a price. Book two to three months out |
| Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) | ~265mm over 11–12 days, front-loaded | Rough early, settling mid-month | Builds from the 15th; Full Moon 24 and 31 Dec | Fine. Coin toss to mid-month, then excellent |
| Eastern seaboard (Koh Chang, Kood, Mak, Pattaya) | 31°C, dry | Calm on west-facing beaches | Full at Christmas, never crowded | Worth it. Wonderfruit 3–7 Dec |
| Isaan (Loei, Khon Kaen, Ubon) | 30°C days, 15–18°C nights; Loei ~8°C at dawn | Mekong low and clear | Almost no foreigners | Best for fewer people. Do it |
What the weather in Thailand is really doing in December, coast by coast
Start in the north: Chiang Mai is 29°C by lunch and 17°C at night, with burning-season haze still two months away, and an hour uphill the number drops fast. Doi Inthanon’s summit, Thailand’s highest point at 2,565 metres, sits in single figures at dawn most December mornings, with frost in the coldest snaps. Entry is ฿300 for foreign adults and ฿150 for children as of October 2026; the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest loop reopens on 1 November with a compulsory guide at around ฿200 per group. Go for sunrise, not the 11am coach arrival: sunrise tours from Chiang Mai leave around 5am for ฿1,500–2,500. Pai, Chiang Rai and Nan are 8–12°C at 6am, and the road to Pai is at its best in December and its busiest at New Year.
Bangkok is 32°C by day, 23°C at night and dry, the one month the old town is walkable at 2pm; things to do in Bangkok and Khao Yai are in their best weeks.
The Andaman is the easy sell: 32°C, about 82mm of rain over seven or eight days against 178mm in November, a flat sea, the year’s best visibility, the Similans open since 15 October and every boat running to schedule. Krabi, Lanta, Phi Phi and Lipe are the same picture; Bangkok to Krabi by air is eighty minutes. The bad news is in the prices section.
The Gulf is the honesty line. Samui still averages around 265mm over 11–12 rain days in December, most of it in the first fortnight; early December is a coin toss, Christmas week is usually excellent, and by the 20th the Koh Tao catamarans are running and the east-coast red flags are down (the ferry caveats are in our Koh Samui rainy season guide). For 1–14 December with the beach as the point, cross to the Andaman. From the 20th Samui is fine and often cheaper than Phuket; the Bangkok to Koh Samui bus-and-ferry route runs in all weather, and Santiburi at Maenam, which discounts in November, is full at Christmas at around ฿16,000 a night.

December public holidays in Thailand 2026: what closes and the alcohol question
Three public holidays and a substitution day; the dates are checked against the Cabinet’s list on our holiday calendar.
| Date | Holiday | Banks, government, immigration | Shops, transport, bars | Alcohol sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat 5 Dec | King Bhumibol’s Birthday, Father’s Day, National Day | Closed | Open; Thais wear yellow | No ban |
| Mon 7 Dec | Substitution holiday | Closed | Open; trains and beach towns full | No ban |
| Thu 10 Dec | Constitution Day | Closed | Open | No ban |
| Fri 25 Dec | Christmas Day (not a holiday) | Open, normal working day | Open; malls in full tinsel | No ban |
| Thu 31 Dec | New Year’s Eve | Closed | Open; countdowns; Bangkok trains run late | No ban |
| Fri 1 Jan 2027 | New Year’s Day | Closed | Open; family restaurants often shut | No ban |
The alcohol point gets muddled every year, so plainly: the sales bans apply on the five Buddhist holy days and on election days, and none of the December holidays is one of them. Bars, 7-Elevens and restaurants sell as normal on 5, 7, 10 and 31 December; a few venues go quiet on the evening of the 5th out of respect, a choice, not a law. Banks, government offices and immigration do close, on the holidays and the substitution Monday, so do not time a visa extension for 7 December. Christmas is a normal working day whose only evidence is a Central mall spending a fortune on a tree.
The 5–7 December weekend and the New Year block are when the whole country moves at once: sleeper trains sell out weeks ahead, the Ekkamai buses to Trat fill, and Hua Hin charges Saturday rates on a Monday. Book intercity transport early (Bangkok to Chiang Mai on 12Go puts the sleeper against the flights) or travel a day either side, and do the arrival admin before you fly: the TDAC form, an eSIM and the visa exemption page, because 30 days is now the number for most passports.
What’s on in Thailand in December 2026: regatta, Wonderfruit, lanterns and countdowns
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, Asia’s biggest keelboat regatta, races a mile off Kata Beach; the organisers list the 37th edition as 5–12 December 2026 (one federation calendar had it a week earlier, so confirm before booking Kata around it). Verdict: worth a free afternoon on the sand with a ฿100–150 beer as the fleet comes round; skip the regatta holiday unless you sail. The rest is in things to do in Phuket.
Wonderfruit, 3–7 December 2026, at The Fields at Siam Country Club outside Pattaya: five days of music, art and the wellness-industrial complex on a farm, around 25,000 people. Five-day passes were ฿8,900 presale and ฿10,000 at general sale, weekend passes ฿7,900–8,900, and by October you are on the resale market. Pattaya beyond the bars covers the daytime city. Verdict: do it if you like a festival; fine to miss if “sound healing” makes you itch.
On Koh Phangan the Full Moon Party lands on Christmas Eve, 24 December, with a countdown party on the 31st (Full Moon Party guide; entry around ฿200). Christmas itself is commercial only, hotel gala dinners at around ฿3,000–8,000 a head and a 30°C 25th with the staff in Santa hats; New Year is the one the country turns up for.
Chiang Mai’s New Year’s Eve is the lantern one: Tha Phae Gate pedestrianised from late afternoon, a stage, a countdown, fireworks, and at midnight a sky full of khom loi. The rules tighten every year because the airport is ten kilometres away: releases are restricted to designated zones and time windows, a street lantern is ฿30–50. Rooms inside the moat sell out; where to stay in Chiang Mai says where else to look, things to do in Chiang Mai fills the days. Chiang Mai Design Week usually lands in the same fortnight; 2026 dates were unconfirmed as we wrote.
Bangkok’s countdowns are the ICONSIAM fireworks over the Chao Phraya and the CentralWorld countdown at Ratchaprasong, both free and both a crush; the river’s public banks are the smarter vantage point, a dinner cruise (฿1,500–3,000 a head normally, far more on the 31st) the lazy one. Our New Year’s Eve in Bangkok guide has the detail; the night markets run as normal.

Thailand prices in December: the peak-season step-up, in baht
Peak pricing is not a scam and it is not subtle. Our Price Index has everything on the Andaman drifting up 20–50 percent between November and April, and beds are where it bites: a decent air-con room at ฿1,000–2,000 in the green season is ฿1,500–3,000 in December on the islands, and the ฿2,000–4,000 mid-range resort is ฿3,000–6,000, with three- or four-night minimums from Christmas Eve to 2 January. Bangkok moves less, perhaps 10–20 percent; Isaan barely moves. Food and transport do not move at all: a ฿60 khao gaeng is ฿60 in December.
| What | Green season | Early December | 24 Dec – 2 Jan | Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decent air-con double, islands | ฿1,000–2,000 | ฿1,500–3,000 | Around ฿2,500–4,500, minimum stays | Agoda Phuket |
| Mid-range pool resort, Phuket or Samui | ฿2,000–4,000 | ฿3,000–6,000 | Around ฿5,000–9,000 | Cost per day |
| Domestic flight, Bangkok to Phuket, one way | ฿900–2,500 | Around ฿1,500–3,000 | Around ฿3,000–5,000 | 12Go |
| Snorkel or island day trip, Krabi or Phuket | ฿800–1,500 | Around ฿1,000–1,800 | Around ฿1,200–2,000, sells out | GetYourGuide |
At the top the swing is wider, and the luxury hotel price guide has the numbers all-in, with the 17.7 percent of tax and service the rate cards leave off: Keemala in Phuket from around ฿15,000 in low season to around ฿25,000 in cool season; the JW Marriott Phuket ฿7,000 to ฿11,500; Raya Heritage in Chiang Mai ฿8,000 to ฿12,000 and the Four Seasons Chiang Mai ฿15,000 to ฿24,000; Bangkok’s Banyan Tree barely flinches, ฿6,000 to ฿8,000. Between 20 December and 10 January the “from” rates stop existing: three- to five-night minimums, a compulsory gala dinner at ฿3,000–8,000 a head, no flexible rate. If the hotel is the point, take the first two weeks of December or the second half of January: identical weather, no surcharge.
Flights follow the same curve: Europe-to-Bangkok fares for the Christmas fortnight sell through by September, and the ฿900–2,500 domestic fare to Phuket or Chiang Mai is around ฿3,000–5,000 on the days everyone wants. Book flights first, rooms two to three months out, Christmas week longer, and run a December version of your trip through the cost calculator: the ฿3,800 comfortable day in what Thailand costs per day becomes around ฿4,500–5,500 on the islands.
Where to go in Thailand in December for fewer people
The crowd is a line from Chiang Mai to Bangkok to Phuket, with a detour to Samui after the 20th. Step off it and December is quiet and cheap. Isaan first: dry, 30°C by day, 15–18°C at night, and hardly a foreign tourist in it. Loei is where Thais go for their own idea of winter (Phu Kradueng’s plateau reopens on 1 October, around 8°C at dawn, tents on top); Phetchabun‘s Khao Kho does the sea-of-mist thing an hour from a proper hotel; Nan is the prettiest small city in the country; Sakon Nakhon has indigo, temples and nobody. Private doubles are ฿500–900 all month; Bangkok to Loei is an overnight bus or a short flight.
The quiet islands are the small ones off Trat: Koh Mak and Koh Kood are dry, calm and, by Phuket standards, empty even at Christmas, though Kood’s few resorts fill and charge for the week; getting to Koh Mak and Koh Kood has the Laem Sok speedboats (around ฿600–900), Bangkok to Koh Kood the through-tickets. Koh Lipe is not quiet: it is small enough to feel full at a fraction of Phuket’s numbers and the Pak Bara boats are booked, so go early in the month or in January (Andaman itinerary; Bangkok to Koh Lipe). In the deep south, Betong‘s sea of fog is at its best in the cool months. And Hua Hin on a Tuesday is a different town from Hua Hin on Saturday 5 December.
- Best for a first trip: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi. Do it; book by October.
- Best for reliable sea: the Andaman. Do it, and pay for it.
- Best for value: Isaan and the north outside Chiang Mai. Do it.
- Best for a party: Koh Phangan on 24 and 31 December, Phuket, Bangkok.
- Best with children: Hua Hin midweek, Khao Lak, Koh Kood.
- Fine: Samui from the 15th; Pai, cold, lovely and rammed at New Year.
- Skip unless: Samui in the first fortnight for a beach trip; Maya Bay at Christmas; Lipe at New Year without a room.

What to pack for Thailand in December (yes, a jumper)
The list is the one in our packing guide with two December additions. One: a proper jumper or fleece and socks if you are going north of Bangkok; Chiang Mai is 17°C at night, Pai and Chiang Rai 8–12°C at dawn, the mountains colder, and the sleeper trains are refrigerated in any month. Two: sun. December on the Andaman is the strongest, clearest version of the year and the breeze hides it; bring reef-safe sunscreen (expensive and thin on the shelves here), a hat and a rash vest. Add a light rain layer for the Gulf early in the month and one smart outfit, because Bangkok’s rooftop bars enforce the dress code on the 31st. Leave the umbrella.
Is Thailand in December worth the money? The verdict
Yes, with a condition. December is the one month when the mainland and the Andaman behave at once, the north is at its best, and every boat runs; it is also the month when the value is weakest, and the Christmas fortnight is the single most expensive stretch of the Thai year. The condition is timing: the first two weeks buy the same weather as Christmas at a third less, with the Father’s Day weekend as the one crowded blip, and the second half of January buys it again, cheaper still. If Christmas is your only window, book by September, pick Bangkok, the north or the Andaman, stay off Samui until the 15th, and write the surcharge down as the cost of doing the thing properly. Nothing here is comped; the numbers are the ones we pay.
Thailand in December: your questions, answered
Is December a good time to visit Thailand?
Yes: it is the best all-round month for Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast, with dry days, calm seas and the coolest temperatures of the year. It is also peak season, so rooms run 30–50 percent above green-season rates and the Christmas fortnight is the most expensive stretch of the year. The Gulf islands are still drying out until mid-month.
Where is it cold in Thailand in December?
The north and the north-east. Chiang Mai drops to around 17°C at night; Pai, Chiang Rai, Nan and Loei to 8–12°C at dawn; and Doi Inthanon’s summit sits in single figures with frost in the coldest snaps. Bangkok stays at 32°C by day and the beaches at 30–32°C. Pack a jumper for anywhere north of Bangkok and for the overnight trains.
Are bars and shops closed on Thailand’s December public holidays?
No. Alcohol-sales bans apply only on the five Buddhist holy days and on election days, and none falls in December. On 5, 7, 10 and 31 December the bars, 7-Elevens, malls, restaurants and public transport run as normal. Banks, government offices and immigration close on the holidays and on the 7 December substitution day. Christmas is a normal working day.
How much more expensive is Thailand in December?
Hotels are the difference. Expect 30–50 percent over green-season rates by mid-December, and more from 24 December to 2 January, when minimum stays and gala-dinner supplements appear. Domestic flights roughly double on the popular days. Food, local transport and sightseeing barely move: a ฿60 street lunch and a ฿17–62 BTS fare cost the same in December as in June.
Is Koh Samui good in December?
From around the 15th, yes: the north-east monsoon eases, the Koh Tao ferries run, the east-coast beaches reopen and Christmas week is usually excellent. The first fortnight is still the tail of the wet season, with around 265mm of rain across the month, most of it early. If your dates are 1–14 December and the beach is the point, choose the Andaman instead.
