Thailand in January is the month the country gets right and charges for. Chiang Mai wakes at 16°C under a sky that stays clean for another five or six weeks, the Andaman is flat enough to count the fish from the boat, Bangkok is 33°C and dry, and every hotelier from Chiang Rai to Koh Lipe keeps the New Year rate card out until about the 5th. Then the flights home fill, the minimum stays lapse and the country quietly exhales. The second half of January is, for our money, the best-value good weather in the Thai calendar. This is the planning version: weather by coast, what is on, what it costs, and where to go once the surcharge is over.
The short version: 1–5 January is Christmas week with a hangover, 6–31 January is peak weather at post-peak prices, and the north’s smoke is a February problem that occasionally starts early. One public holiday (Friday 1 January) and no alcohol bans; Children’s Day on Saturday 9 January; the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival on the third weekend; Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February, which is the deadline for cheap rooms in Bangkok and Phuket. Dates are from our festival and holiday calendar, baht from the Price Index, the year-round picture from best time to visit Thailand; “around” marks our estimates. The months before are in Thailand in December and Thailand in November.
Thailand in January at a glance: the region-by-region table
Figures are rounded from the WMO and Thai Meteorological Department 1991–2020 normals for each station (the TMD has the live forecasts); crowds and verdicts are ours. Read the month in two halves: to about the 5th it is the New Year block, with full flights, minimum stays and the Christmas surcharge; from the second week the prices fall and the weather does not.
| Region | January normals | Sea | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok and the central plains | 33°C days, 23°C nights, ~24mm over 2 days | River flat; Ayutthaya cycling weather | Heavy to the 5th, then normal | Do it. The city’s driest, coolest month |
| North (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, Nan) | 30°C days, 16°C nights; 14°C dawns in Chiang Rai; single figures on the mountains | Rivers clear; skies clean until late month | Chiang Mai full to the 5th; Pai rammed at New Year | Worth it. The northern year’s best weeks; go early in the month |
| Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta, Lipe) | 33°C, ~50mm over 4 days | Flat and clear; every boat runs | Peak; Phi Phi and Lipe at capacity | Do it, at a price. Second half is cheaper |
| Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) | 29°C, ~127mm over 8–9 days, front-loaded | Choppy on the east coast early, settling mid-month | Full to the 5th, then normal | Fine. Good from about the 10th, not before |
| East coast (Koh Chang, Mak, Kood) and Hua Hin | 30°C, ~25mm; dry | Calm on the west-facing beaches | Full at New Year, then quiet | Worth it. The quiet alternative to the Andaman |
| Isaan (Loei, Udon Thani, Ubon) | 30°C days, 16–17°C nights; Loei near 0°C in a cold snap | Mekong low and clear | Almost none | Best for value and space. Do it |
What the weather in Thailand is really doing in January, region by region
The north is the reason to come in January and the reason to come early in it. Chiang Mai runs 30°C by lunch and 16°C at night on 11mm of rain for the entire month, with 258 hours of sunshine, the most of its year; Chiang Rai is 14°C at dawn and has recorded 1.5°C; Doi Inthanon’s summit sits in single figures most mornings with frost in the cold snaps, ฿300 at the gate, the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest loop open with its compulsory Karen guide, and a small-group day trip from the city ฿1,200–1,800. The road to Pai is at its best once the New Year crowd leaves, and things to do in Chiang Mai works in full. The honesty line is the air. The fires that make March unbreathable start in January in most years; in 2026 smoke was being recorded in Chiang Mai from January and the city topped the world’s pollution rankings by March. In an ordinary year the air is fine to the end of the month and turns in the last week of February, but check a live PM2.5 reading before booking the last days of January, and treat the first week of February as the edge.
Bangkok is 33°C by day, 23°C at night, 24mm of rain across two days and, for once, walkable at 2pm: things to do in Bangkok and the Ayutthaya day trip are in their best month.
The Andaman is the easy sell and knows it. Phuket runs 33°C on 50mm over four rain days, visibility is at its annual best, the Similans are open (฿500 park fee, day trips from Khao Lak ฿3,200–4,500, a daily cap of around 3,300 that sells out in the first fortnight) and Maya Bay is open at ฿400 plus the ฿20 pier fee. Krabi, Lanta and Phi Phi are the same picture; Koh Lipe, at the bottom of the map, is 33°C on 44mm at the Satun station, the Pak Bara speedboats and the Langkawi ferry run daily, and the Tarutao park fee is ฿200 (how to get to Koh Lipe; Bangkok to Koh Lipe on 12Go). Every one of them is at capacity to the 5th. Bangkok to Krabi is the eighty-minute flight; things to do in Krabi ranks what to do when you land.
The Gulf is the one to read carefully. Samui still averages around 127mm over eight or nine rain days in January, most of it in the first ten days as the north-east monsoon fades; Chaweng and Lamai can carry red flags in the first week, the Koh Tao catamarans are running again and Ang Thong marine park reopened in mid-December (our Koh Samui rainy season guide has the pattern). From around the 10th it is fine and often cheaper than Phuket, and February is its best month of the year. Bangkok to Koh Samui on 12Go has the bus-and-ferry route beside the flight.
The east coast and Isaan are the sleepers. Hua Hin is 30°C on 25mm; Koh Chang, Mak and Kood are dry with calm west-facing beaches (Koh Chang ranking); Udon Thani averages 6mm of rain in the month and 17°C dawns, and Loei has recorded 0°C, which is as cold as lowland Thailand gets.

January public holidays in Thailand 2027: one Friday, no alcohol bans, and the New Year exodus
One public holiday, Friday 1 January, which gives the whole country a three-day weekend and gives you the busiest travel days of the year. The 2027 list below is the Bank of Thailand’s as of October 2026; the Cabinet had not yet gazetted its own, which is where any bridge days come from, and the holiday calendar updates the day it does. None of January’s dates is a Buddhist holy day, so there are no alcohol-sales bans until Makha Bucha in late February.
| Date | What | Banks, government, immigration | Shops, transport, bars | Alcohol sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 1 Jan | New Year’s Day (public holiday) | Closed, immigration included | Open; family restaurants shut; intercity transport full 1–3 Jan | No ban |
| Sat 9 Jan | National Children’s Day (not a holiday) | Normal Saturday | Zoos, museums, Government House and military bases open free to children | No ban |
| Fri 22 Jan (TBC) | Full Moon Party | n/a | Haad Rin; organisers confirm the 2027 list late in 2026 | No ban |
| Sat 6 Feb | Chinese New Year (not a national holiday) | Open, bar government offices in the deep south | Thai-Chinese shops shut one to four days; Yaowarat pedestrianised | No ban |
| Sun 21 and Mon 22 Feb (provisional) | Makha Bucha and the day in lieu | Closed Monday | Open | Banned outside licensed exemptions |
The days to avoid moving are 1–3 January, the return leg of the New Year migration: the Chiang Mai sleepers, the Ekkamai buses to Trat and the domestic flights are full and priced for it. Travel on the 4th or later, or book now: Bangkok to Chiang Mai on 12Go puts the ฿600–900 sleeper against the flights. Immigration closes on the 1st, so do not time an extension for it, and do the arrival admin before you fly: the TDAC form, an eSIM, and the 30-day exemption in force since September, because a five-week winter escape now needs the ฿1,900 extension or a visa.
What’s on in Thailand in January 2027: Bo Sang umbrellas, Children’s Day and the run-up to Chinese New Year
The Bo Sang Umbrella and San Kamphaeng Handicraft Festival is the north’s January event and the best free afternoon in the province. The 41st edition ran 16–18 January 2026, the third weekend as always, so pencil in 15–17 January 2027 and expect the district to confirm in December. Bo Sang village sits about 16 kilometres east of Chiang Mai on the San Kamphaeng road: the main street is hung end to end with painted saa-paper umbrellas and lanterns, the workshops let you paint your own for a few hundred baht, the Kad Mua market sells Lanna food at Lanna prices, and the parade of local women cycling in traditional dress under parasols is the photograph everyone came for. A Grab from the Old City is around ฿150–250 each way; the white songthaews from Warorot market cost a fraction of that. Verdict: Worth it, late afternoon into the evening; skip the coach tour that stops at one umbrella factory and calls it the festival. Bo Sang and San Kamphaeng tours on GetYourGuide bundle it with the hot springs; our Chiang Mai night markets guide has the rest of the week’s evenings.
National Children’s Day is Saturday 9 January 2027, the second Saturday of January as always, and not a public holiday. Based on the 2026 programme: the six zoos run by the Zoological Park Organisation (Khao Kheow near Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla and Ubon Ratchathani) admit children free, Museum Siam and most state museums waive the ticket, Government House opens its gates so children can sit in the Prime Minister’s chair, and the air force and army open bases so seven-year-olds can climb into a cockpit. Verdict: Do it if you are travelling with children, expect a queue at anything with a tank in it, and note that Thai families take the whole weekend, so Khao Yai, Hua Hin and Pattaya fill. Phuket with kids has the island version.
The Full Moon Party is pencilled for Friday 22 January, pending the organisers’ 2027 list (Full Moon Party guide). And February arrives early on the booking calendar: Chinese New Year is Saturday 6 February 2027, not a public holiday but the loudest weekend of the year on Yaowarat, in Nakhon Sawan and, a week or two later, in Phuket Old Town; Chinatown rooms roughly double for the 5th and 6th and the Phuket flights follow. Our Chinese New Year 2027 guide has the dates and the closures. Chiang Mai’s Flower Festival is pencilled for 5–7 February, and Makha Bucha on Sunday 21 February, with the Monday in lieu, is the first alcohol-ban day of the year.

Thailand prices in January: the New Year surcharge, when it ends and what mid-January costs
Peak pricing is not a scam, it is a calendar. Our Price Index has everything on the Andaman drifting up 20–50 percent between November and April, and the luxury tracker treats 20 December to 10 January as its own secret season: no flexible rate, three- to five-night minimums, a compulsory gala dinner on the 31st. In the mid-range the block ends earlier, around the 5th, because that is when the flights home go; by the 10th the “from” rates are back on the booking sites, and by the 16th the rate is around 20–30 percent under New Year for identical weather. Food and transport do not move at all: a ฿60 khao gaeng is ฿60 on 1 January, the BTS is ฿17–62 and a ฿35 taxi flagfall is ฿35.
| What | 1–5 January | 6–15 January | 16–31 January | Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decent air-con double, islands | Around ฿2,500–4,500, minimum stays | ฿1,500–3,000 | ฿1,500–2,500 | Agoda Phuket |
| Mid-range pool resort, Phuket or Samui | Around ฿5,000–9,000 | ฿3,000–6,000 | Around ฿3,000–5,000 | Cost per day |
| Domestic flight, Bangkok to Phuket, one way | Around ฿3,000–5,000 | Around ฿1,500–3,000 | ฿900–2,500 | 12Go |
| Island day trip, Phuket or Krabi | ฿1,200–2,000, sells out | ฿1,000–1,800 | ฿800–1,500 | GetYourGuide |
At the top the swing is wider and the tax is the surprise: add 17.7 percent to any rate card quoted “++”. Keemala in Phuket is from around ฿25,000 all-in in cool season against ฿15,000 in the rains; the Four Seasons Chiang Mai ฿24,000 against ฿15,000; Raya Heritage on the Ping ฿12,000 against ฿8,000 and still the best luxury-per-baht in the country; Bangkok’s Banyan Tree barely moves, ฿8,000 against ฿6,000. The tracker’s next real discount is the second half of February, after Chinese New Year, but the minimum stays lift around the 10th, and a Sunday-to-Thursday stay in the second half of January is the cheapest way to sleep in any of them under a clear sky. On the day rate, what Thailand costs per day puts a comfortable day at ฿3,800; on the islands in January call it around ฿4,500–5,500, and the cost calculator does the sums for your dates.
Where to go in Thailand in January for fewer people, and where to avoid
The crowd walks a line from Chiang Mai to Bangkok to Phuket, with Phi Phi and Lipe at the end of it and Samui bolted on from the 10th. Step off it and January is quiet, cold at dawn and cheap. Chiang Rai and Nan are the north without the queue: 14°C mornings, clear to the end of the month, the sea of mist at Phu Chi Fa at sunrise, and decent rooms at around ฿800–1,500 (things to do in Chiang Rai, Nan; Bangkok to Chiang Rai on 12Go). Isaan is drier still: Loei for Phu Kradueng’s plateau and Chiang Khan’s morning alms, Phetchabun‘s Khao Kho for the mist with a proper hotel attached, private doubles ฿500–900 everywhere, and Bangkok to Loei an overnight bus or a short flight. On the coasts, Khao Lak beats Phuket as the Similan base and The Sarojin is the hotel we would pick for it; Koh Mak and Koh Kood are dry, calm and, by Andaman standards, empty from the 6th; Hua Hin on a Tuesday is a different town; Betong‘s sea of fog is at its best. The list to avoid is short: Phi Phi at New Year (our Phi Phi verdict stands), Lipe without a booking, Pai on the 31st, and Samui’s east coast in the first week if the beach is the point.
- Best for a first trip: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, from the 6th. Do it.
- Best for reliable sea: the Andaman, any week. Do it, and pay for it to the 5th.
- Best for value: Chiang Rai, Nan and Isaan. Do it.
- Best for a party: Koh Phangan around the 22nd, Bangkok, Phuket.
- Best with children: anywhere with a zoo on the 9th; Hua Hin, Khao Lak, Koh Kood.
- Fine: Samui from the 10th; Pai, cold and lovely once the New Year crowd leaves.
- Skip unless: Phi Phi or Lipe 1–5 January without a booking; Chiang Mai in the last days of the month if you have asthma and the readings have already turned.

What to pack for Thailand in January (the fleece is not optional up north)
Take our packing list and add three things. One: a real fleece, socks and a hat for the north, because Chiang Mai is 16°C at night, Chiang Rai and Pai 10–14°C at dawn, the mountain viewpoints single figures, and the sleeper trains are refrigerated. Two: sun, because January on the Andaman is the strongest, clearest light of the year and the breeze hides it; reef-safe sunscreen from home (thin and expensive here), a hat, a rash vest for the children. Three: an N95 mask in the bag if you are in the north after the 25th and the PM2.5 readings turn, which they did in 2026. Long trousers for temples and the 6am cold, one outfit that passes a Bangkok rooftop dress code, a light layer for the Gulf’s first week. Leave the umbrella.
Is Thailand in January worth the money? The verdict
Yes, in two halves. 1–5 January is Christmas week with the country travelling home on top: the same surcharge, the same minimum stays, the same crowds, and worse transport. If that is your only window, treat it as December and book by October. 6–31 January is the argument for January: the north’s best fortnight, flat seas on both coasts by mid-month, the Gulf back in play, prices 20–30 percent under New Year for the same sky, and no holidays or alcohol bans to plan around. The two honesty lines are the north’s air, which can turn in the last week, and the famous Andaman islands, which are at capacity all month regardless of price. Book flights first, rooms six to eight weeks out for mid-month, and treat 5–6 February as the next surcharge. Nothing here is comped; the numbers are the ones we pay.
Thailand in January: your questions, answered
Is January a good time to visit Thailand?
Yes: it is the coolest, driest month for Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast, with flat seas, the year’s best visibility and 16°C nights in Chiang Mai. The first five days carry the New Year surcharge and crowds; from around the 6th prices fall while the weather holds, and the second half of January is the best-value good weather of the year.
How cold does Thailand get in January?
Cold enough for a fleece in the north. Chiang Mai averages 16°C at night, Chiang Rai 14°C at dawn, Pai and the hill towns 10°C or lower, and Doi Inthanon’s summit sits in single figures with frost in cold snaps; Loei has recorded 0°C. Bangkok stays at 33°C by day and 23°C at night, and the beaches at 30–33°C.
Is Thailand expensive in January, and when do prices drop?
The first five days are priced like Christmas: island rooms around ฿2,500–4,500 with minimum stays, domestic flights around ฿3,000–5,000. The block ends around the 5th in the mid-range and by the 10th at the top end; by mid-January island doubles are ฿1,500–2,500 and flights ฿900–2,500. Food, local transport and sightseeing never move.
Is the burning season a problem in Chiang Mai in January?
Usually not. Agricultural burning begins in January in most years, but PM2.5 readings normally stay acceptable until the last week of February and peak in March. 2026 was worse than usual, with smoke recorded from January. Check a live AQI reading before booking the last days of the month, and go to the coast instead if it is already over 100.
What holidays and festivals are there in Thailand in January 2027?
One public holiday, Friday 1 January, and no alcohol bans. National Children’s Day is Saturday 9 January, with free zoo and museum entry for children. The Bo Sang Umbrella Festival near Chiang Mai is expected on 15–17 January and the Full Moon Party around 22 January, both to be confirmed. Chinese New Year follows on Saturday 6 February.
