Koh Lipe is a four-square-kilometre smear of sand at the very bottom of Thailand, and every third article about it calls it the Maldives of Thailand. It is not the Maldives. It is a village of Urak Lawoi sea people that grew a resort island on top of itself, inside a national park, with the best beach water on the Andaman coast and a high street that could be anywhere. Whether Koh Lipe is worth the journey depends on which of those two islands you came for.
The short version: three beaches, one of them worth crossing the country for; a ฿200 park fee; prices 30–50% above the mainland; and a season that runs November to April, after which a third to a half of the island shuts. Every route ends on a speedboat from Pak Bara pier in Satun province (฿600–750, about 90 minutes) unless you arrive from Koh Lanta or Langkawi in high season. Three or four nights, cash in your pocket, a bed on Sunrise or Sunset, and our Lanta vs Lipe vs Phi Phi comparison read first.
What Koh Lipe actually is, and why it costs what it costs
Roughly 60 km off Pak Bara and 30 km from Langkawi, Lipe is the settled exception inside Tarutao National Marine Park, a 51-island archipelago of ranger stations and forest. The Urak Lawoi were here before the park was, which is why this island has a village, a school, a mosque and several hundred hotel rooms while Koh Adang, a channel away, has none. No cars: you walk everywhere in fifteen or twenty minutes, or flag a motorbike-sidecar taxi for around ฿50–100. The spine is Walking Street, 600 metres of restaurants, dive shops and bars between Pattaya and Sunrise beaches, pedestrian from about six in the evening. Every beer, tomato and plumber arrives by speedboat, so the rule of thumb is mainland Thailand plus 30–50%. Nothing here was comped, and nobody offered.
Koh Lipe’s three beaches, ranked honestly
Sunrise Beach (Hat Chao Le) — the reason to come. A long, east-facing curve of fine white sand with Koh Adang’s green wall across the channel, longtails moored in swimming-pool water, and a house reef a short swim out. Shallow, calm all high season, sun on it from dawn. Do it — sleep here.
Sunset Beach (Hat Pramong) — small, scruffy, lovely. A west-facing cove over the hill, rocks at both ends, a handful of bungalow outfits, a couple of bars and the island’s only proper sundowner. Swim at high tide; at low tide it is rock and weed. Worth it.
Pattaya Beach (Hat Pattaya) — the arrivals hall. The same sand and water on the wide southern arc, plus the floating pier: between roughly ten and two every speedboat on the island comes across it, engines, fumes, ฿50 a head for the longtail shuttle. The pools are here, and the Langkawi ferry lands at the immigration hut on the sand. Fine after three; skip it as a midday swim. Sanom, a pocket cove beyond the western headland, has one resort and decent rock snorkelling.
| Beach | Faces | Sand and water | Best for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise (Hat Chao Le) | East, Koh Adang | Fine white sand, shallow, house reef | Swimming, snorkelling, families | Do it — sleep here |
| Sunset (Hat Pramong) | West | Small cove, rocky ends, high-tide swim | Quiet, the evening beer | Worth it |
| Pattaya (Hat Pattaya) | South, Pak Bara | Wide white arc, pier, speedboat traffic | Pools, bars, the Langkawi ferry | Fine after 3pm; skip at midday |
The geography decides for you: Sunrise for the water, Sunset for the quiet, Pattaya only if you do not mind being the island’s front door.

Walking Street: what a night out on Koh Lipe costs, and what to skip
Walking Street is Khao San with sand. A big Chang is ฿100–150, a pad thai ฿100–150, an hour’s massage around ฿400–500, and the seafood barbecues — pick the fish off the ice, pay by weight — run from about ฿400 a plate to well past ฿1,000 for a whole snapper for two. There is a great deal of ฿300 pasta from kitchens that will never see you again, which is exactly why it is mediocre. Fire shows and buckets happen on Pattaya and the south end of Sunrise and are done by midnight; this is not a party island, whatever the bar with the fluorescent paint thinks.
Eat better by walking ten metres off the strip: the lanes behind it have roti stalls, rice-and-curry counters and southern curries at ฿60–120 a plate, and the Urak Lawoi grill places towards Sunrise get the fishermen’s own catch. Skip the pizza, the “Italian” with the laminated photographs and the tattoo shop after your third bucket.
Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and Hin Ngam: what the ฿200 Tarutao park fee buys
Every foreign adult pays the Tarutao National Park fee of ฿200 (฿100 for children of two to eleven, ฿40 for Thais), collected at the booth on Pak Bara pier or on arrival and valid for five days — keep the ticket, because the boatmen ask for it. Divers pay a further ฿200 a day. What it buys is the archipelago, which is the actual attraction, and the longtail trips to it are cheap because the boats belong to the village.
| Trip | What you see | Cost (2026) | Verdict | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inner islands, half day, shared longtail | Jabang soft-coral pinnacle, Hin Ngam’s black pebbles, Koh Yang, Koh Adang reef | Around ฿450–750 a head, plus park fee | Do it, morning boat | Compare snorkel trips |
| Outer islands, full day, shared longtail | Koh Rawi, Koh Dong, Hin Son, Koh Rokroy | Around ฿800–1,200 a head, usually with lunch | Do it with three nights | Any tour desk |
| Private longtail, half or full day | Your own itinerary and timing | Around ฿2,000–3,500 per boat | Worth it for four | Ask your resort |
| Koh Adang, Chado Cliff viewpoint | Three lookouts over the archipelago | Longtail around ฿100 a head each way; 45–60 min climb | Do it, before 9am | Boatmen on Sunrise |
| Fun dive (8 Mile Rock, Stonehenge) | Pinnacles, occasional whale-shark rumours | Around ฿1,300–1,600 a tank, plus ฿200 park fee daily | Fine — Koh Tao is cheaper | Dive shops, Walking Street |
Two rules. Take the morning boat, when the sea is glass and Hin Ngam has four people on it rather than forty, and leave Hin Ngam’s stones where they are — the local story is a curse, the park’s version is a fine, and both are enforced with enthusiasm. Koh Adang has park bungalows and a campsite by the ranger station; a night there is the archipelago without a speedboat in the frame. The trips run roughly October to May; outside that the boatmen are mending nets.

When to go to Koh Lipe: the season, the monsoon and the Christmas scrum
November to April is the season: dry, flat seas, every boat running, every resort open. December to February is when the island is rammed — Christmas and New Year, then Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027 — with rooms at double and the Lanta speedboats sold out a fortnight ahead. The clever windows are mid-November to mid-December, when the sea has settled and the prices have not, and March into April: hotter and hazier, but calm, cheaper and half as busy. The month-by-month guide has the coast-by-coast detail; the holiday calendar flags the Thai long weekends that fill the Pak Bara boats.
May to October is the honesty clause. A third to a half of the restaurants, bars, tour desks and resorts close, the boats from Lanta, Phi Phi and Langkawi stop, the longtail trips stop, and the swell comes straight onto Sunrise Beach. Pak Bara speedboats run all year — one or two sailings a day instead of six, cancelled most often from August to October. Open rooms drop 30–50%. Late May and October are the gamble; June to September is Koh Lanta’s job.
How to get to Koh Lipe, the short version
No airport, no car ferry. Every route, including the vans from Trang and the sleeper train, is costed in how to get to Koh Lipe; this is the table to pick a plan from.
| Route | Time | Price (as of October 2026) | Runs | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pak Bara pier → Koh Lipe, speedboat | About 90 min | ฿600–750 | Year-round; 1–2 a day in monsoon | Pak Bara to Koh Lipe |
| Hat Yai airport or town → Koh Lipe, van plus boat | 4–4.5 h | Around ฿900–1,200 | Daily, year-round | Hat Yai to Koh Lipe |
| Koh Lanta (Saladan) → Koh Lipe, speedboat via Koh Ngai and Kradan | About 3 h | ฿1,700–2,300 | Mid-Oct/Nov to end Apr/mid-May | Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe |
| Langkawi (Telaga Harbour or Kuah) → Koh Lipe, ferry | About 90 min | 155 MYR, around ฿1,200 | 15 Oct 2026 – 31 May 2027 | Langkawi to Koh Lipe |
| Bangkok → Hat Yai, flight or sleeper train | 1.5 h fly; 15–16 h train | ฿1,200–3,000 fly; around ฿900–1,500 sleeper | Daily | Bangkok to Hat Yai |
Arrival is its own small ordeal: speedboats tie up at the floating pier off Pattaya Beach, a longtail takes you the last hundred metres for ฿50 a head, the park booth wants its ฿200 if Pak Bara did not already, and then you walk. The Langkawi ferry — two sailings a day from November to mid-April as of October 2026 — lands you at Thai immigration, a hut on the sand next to Bundhaya Resort, and yes, you get stamped into Thailand in flip-flops. Ferry Lipe’s 2026–27 timetable runs the island boats from 15 October to 30 April; other operators start in November and finish around mid-May.

The honesty list: water, rubbish, ATMs, 4G and the clinic
Water. Lipe drinks from wells, and with no proper sewage treatment the groundwater is not clean. Do not drink the tap, expect brackish showers at the cheaper bungalows, and refill at the Trash Hero stations — the organisation started on this beach in 2013, for the obvious reason. Rubbish. No landfill: waste is barged to the mainland or burnt behind the village, and if the wind is wrong in April you will smell which. The lanes behind Pattaya are not the postcard.
Money. There are ATMs now — a handful on Walking Street, reportedly all from the same bank, so one outage empties the island, and over New Year they run dry regardless. Each withdrawal carries the ฿220 foreign-card fee from our ATMs and cards guide. Roughly four in ten businesses take cards, usually with a 3% surcharge; the boatmen, the roti lady and the park booth do not. No 7-Eleven as of October 2026. Connectivity. AIS and DTAC 4G work on all three beaches; sort a plan on the mainland with our SIM and eSIM guide. Medical. A small public health station, a couple of private clinics and a good pharmacy, fine for coral cuts and the bottle-of-Sangsom flu. Anything serious is a speedboat to the mainland and an ambulance to Hat Yai, which is why the packing list says reef shoes and travel insurance and means it.
Where to stay on Koh Lipe, beach by beach
Rooms run from ฿500 dorm beds to ฿10,000 villas, and the beach matters more than the star count. High-season “from” rates as of October 2026; low season 30–50% under, Christmas roughly double. Sunrise Beach: Idyllic Concept Resort (from around ฿6,500; the polished one, pool, mid-beach, the island’s default honeymoon); Serendipity Beach Resort (from around ฿5,500; hillside villas over the southern rocks, the best view on the island and a lot of steps); Castaway Resort (from around ฿3,000; two-storey bamboo bungalows, fan-cooled by design, the original Sunrise address). Pattaya Beach: Akira Lipe Resort (from around ฿5,500; pool, proper rooms, the quieter western end); Bundhaya Resort (from around ฿3,500; next to the immigration hut, convenient for Langkawi and loud at pier hours). Sunset Beach: Bayview Sunset Resort (from around ฿2,500; bungalows on the hill above the cove). Budget: Bloom Cafe and Hostel (dorm beds from around ฿500, a minute off Walking Street). Between May and October, ask what is actually open before paying for anything non-refundable.
What Koh Lipe costs per day
Dearer than Lanta or Phi Phi, and the boat fares at each end are the part people forget. Budget, around ฿2,000 a day: a dorm or fan hut at ฿500–800, ฿400–500 of roti, curry and grilled fish from the lanes, two ฿100 beers, a shared longtail every other day. Comfortable couple, around ฿5,000–7,000 a day for two: a mid-range double at ฿2,500–4,000, a seafood dinner at ฿1,000–1,500, a snorkel trip, a massage each. Add ฿1,500–2,500 a person to get in and out from Hat Yai, plus the park fee. Cross-check the Thailand Price Index and what Thailand costs per day; Lipe sits a clear notch above both.
Koh Lipe verdict by traveller type: who should go, who should skip it
Beach and snorkel purists — do it. Sunrise Beach and the Adang archipelago are the best combination of sand, water and cheap boats on the Andaman coast. Couples with a fortnight — worth it, as the finale of a Lanta-then-Lipe run; the seven-day Andaman itinerary shows how it fits. Honeymooners — worth it, on Sunrise, at a third less than Phi Phi’s north-east resorts. Families with small children — fine, with caveats: Sunrise is shallow and calm, but the journey is long and the nearest hospital is a boat ride; Klong Dao is the easier week, and where to stay in Koh Lanta explains why. Divers — fine, though the Similans are better. Nightlife — skip it; it closes at midnight and you will have paid Lipe prices for the privilege. June to September — skip it, for Lanta by road or Phi Phi with low expectations. The Maldives crowd — the water really is that colour, but you share it with a village, a strip and a speedboat fleet; accept that and the trip improves.
Koh Lipe: your questions, answered
Is Koh Lipe worth visiting?
Yes, between November and April, if beaches and snorkelling are the point: Sunrise Beach and the Koh Adang longtail trips are the best of their kind on the Andaman coast. It is not worth it for nightlife, for a monsoon-season trip, or if ฿100–150 for a beer will spoil your week.
How much is the Koh Lipe national park fee?
As of October 2026 the Tarutao National Marine Park fee is ฿200 for foreign adults, ฿100 for children aged two to eleven and ฿40 for Thais, collected at Pak Bara pier or when you land. The ticket is valid for five days; keep it, because boatmen check it before snorkelling trips. Divers pay another ฿200 a day.
Is Koh Lipe open in the low season?
Partly. Pak Bara speedboats run all year, one or two a day in monsoon, but from roughly mid-May to mid-October a third to a half of the resorts, restaurants and tour desks close, the Lanta, Phi Phi and Langkawi boats stop, and the swell hits Sunrise Beach. Open rooms are 30–50% cheaper. June to September, pick Koh Lanta.
Are there ATMs on Koh Lipe?
A handful on Walking Street, reportedly all run by the same bank, so a single fault takes them all down, and over Christmas and New Year they run out of notes. Each withdrawal costs the ฿220 foreign-card fee. Around 40% of businesses take cards, usually with a surcharge; boats, street food and the park booth are cash only. Withdraw in Hat Yai or at Pak Bara.
Which beach should you stay on in Koh Lipe?
Sunrise Beach for the water, the house reef and the view of Koh Adang; Sunset Beach for quiet and the evening beer; Pattaya Beach only if you want a pool, the bars and the Langkawi ferry on your doorstep and can live with speedboat traffic across the sand between ten and two. Everything is a fifteen-minute walk from everything else.
