The metered-taxi counter outside Phuket airport asks one question before it quotes a price, and it is not how many bags: it is which beach. Where to stay in Phuket decides the whole holiday. Get it wrong and you get jet skis, a tuk-tuk cartel and a bar street that shuts at 4am; get it right and this is still the easiest serious beach holiday in Thailand — 50 kilometres of west-facing sand, an old town worth two nights, and beds from a ฿450 dorm to a ฿40,000 pavilion.
So this guide carves the island into its nine real areas — north to south down the west coast, then round to the town and the cape — and matches each to a traveller. Every hotel named is one we would book with our own money, at a cool-season “from” rate checked against the live listing; the geography and the seasons are on our Phuket province profile.
The short version: Kata for most first-timers, Karon for more sand with fewer people on it, Kamala or Bang Tao for families with a car, Old Town for two nights of food, Nai Harn or Rawai for a month, Mai Khao for a resort week that never leaves the pool, and Patong only if Bangla Road is the reason you came. What to do once you have unpacked is in our guide to things to do in Phuket that aren’t Bangla Road.
How Phuket is laid out (and which coast to sleep on)
The airport sits at the top of the island and every beach you have heard of is on the west coast below it, in a line: the further south you sleep, the longer the transfer and, mostly, the better the town behind the sand. The east coast faces the mainland across a muddy strait and has no beach worth the name; Phuket Town sits there instead, with Cape Panwa off its southern end. Three hill roads — into Patong from Kathu, over the headlands between Patong, Karon and Kata, and the Kamala climb — keep the clinics in scooter riders. North to south, then round to the east:
- Mai Khao and Nai Yang — the airport beaches: ten empty kilometres with a year-round undertow at Mai Khao, a reef-sheltered village beach at Nai Yang, villa resorts, no town.
- Surin, Bang Tao and Laguna — the best sand on the coast under a headland of expensive villas, then six flat kilometres with the Laguna resort estate and Cherng Talay, the laptop district, behind. Nothing walkable.
- Kamala — a two-kilometre bay with a Thai village, weekend picnics on the sand, one beach club and hills full of honeymoon villas. Asleep by eleven.
- Patong — the city: three kilometres of decent beach, Bangla Road, two malls, a boxing stadium and the touts. Walkable and loud.
- Karon — three kilometres of wide, squeaky sand, a road behind it and the worst rip currents on the island. Spacious, family-run, quiet after ten.
- Kata and Kata Noi — the first-timer’s default: a protected bay with a walkable town, surf schools from May and, over the headland, Kata Noi, the best dry-season swim on Phuket.
- Nai Harn and Rawai — the far south: the island’s best all-round beach, then a longtail pier and a seafood row where the long-stayers live. Forty minutes and a different island from Patong.
- Old Town — no beach, the best food on Phuket, Sino-Portuguese shophouses, the Sunday walking street and hostel beds from ฿300. Two nights of any trip.
- Cape Panwa — the quiet peninsula south of town: an aquarium, a couple of coves, resorts on a calm east-facing sea and the Phi Phi ferries next door.
Beach by beach, with the rips and the beer prices, is our Phuket beaches, ranked; the five-way west-coast argument is settled in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala or Bang Tao. The table is the short answer.

Where to stay in Phuket by traveller type
First-timers and short stays
Kata, with Karon if you want more sand and less town. Kata has what a first trip needs within a ten-minute walk: a protected bay with lifeguards, a beach road where not every restaurant is a trap, the ฿100 Smart Bus, ATMs and no Bangla. The trade-offs: from May to October it becomes the surf beach and the swim goes, and Old Town is a ฿350–500 Grab away.
Families
Kata’s southern corner for toddlers, Karon for space, Kamala for Thai neighbours, Mai Khao for a pool week. Karon and Kamala both grow a monsoon rip, so between May and October obey the red flag without a debate. The resorts with proper kids’ clubs are on Karon and Kamala; the easiest day out is the longtail from Rawai to Coral Island — compare Coral Island snorkelling trips on GetYourGuide rather than the beach touts.
Couples and honeymooners
The Kamala hills, Surin, Nai Harn or Cape Panwa, in that order of expense. Kamala’s cliffs hold the villas with the sunset; Surin has the best sand and the quietest evenings; Nai Harn is for people who came to swim rather than be seen; Cape Panwa has a calm sea and no beach road. Patong is the wrong answer unless you can afford to bypass it at the Rosewood, which has its own bay round the headland.
Digital nomads and long-stayers
Cherng Talay, behind Bang Tao, is the laptop district — co-working, the cafés on Boat Avenue, monthly apartments from around ฿20,000 — and needs a scooter. Rawai and Nai Harn are the older, cheaper long-stay colony with the best beach; Old Town is for anyone who wants a city rather than a resort, with rooms from ฿1,300 and the island’s food on foot. The visa that makes a Phuket winter legal is in our DTV guide.
Budget and backpackers
Old Town first: hostel beds from around ฿300, shophouse rooms from ฿1,300, ฿50 plates in the market and the Phuket night markets on the doorstep, at the price of the beach being a ฿30–50 songthaew away until 6pm and a ฿350–500 Grab after it. On the coast, a street inland at Karon or Kata cuts 30–40% off a beachfront room; Patong has the cheapest beds by the sand and the loudest nights. What a day costs is in our Thailand cost per day guide.
Luxury
The deepest top end in Thailand and the most seasonal: Pansea and Surin for the grand old names, Layan and Nai Thon for private-beach villas, Laguna for the lagoon estate with the golf course and the flattest walking for anyone over sixty, the Kamala hills for the fantasy villas, Mai Khao for villa resorts a quarter-hour from the plane. The same villa costs half as much in September as at New Year, and 17% tax and service arrives at checkout; the numbers are in our Thailand luxury hotel price guide.

The hotels we’d actually shortlist, area by area
Cool-season (November to April) “from” rates for a standard double or entry villa, rounded, as of October 2026; expect 30–40% less from May to October and 20–50% more over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year. Every name was checked against the live Agoda listing; the links are affiliate links, disclosed at the foot. Nothing was comped.
Patong: Amari Phuket (from around ฿6,500) sits on the southern headland with a path to the calm end of the beach and a hill between you and Bangla — the way to sleep in Patong without living in it. Minimal House Patong (from around ฿600) is a clean box for the night before a dawn flight.
Kata and Kata Noi: Katathani Phuket Beach Resort (from around ฿5,500) owns most of Kata Noi and earns it: six pools, the best dry-season swimming on the island, nothing to walk to and no need. The Boathouse Phuket (from around ฿7,000) is the small old-school hotel on the sand at Kata’s southern corner, with the wine list the island’s other hotels borrow from.
Karon: Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Karon Beach (from around ฿4,500; the old Novotel Karon) has the water park, the supervised kids’ club and steps to the sand — the answer for most families. Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket (from around ฿6,500) at the southern end has bigger slides and a dive centre for teenagers. Avista Grande Phuket Karon MGallery (from around ฿4,500) is the design hotel a street back, better for couples. Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort (from around ฿6,000) has its own cove at Relax Bay and, as of October 2026, a rolling refurbishment with pools and restaurants shut in turn — read the newest reviews first. Pineapple Guesthouse (dorms from around ฿300, doubles ฿1,000) has a pool and the beach five minutes away.
Kamala: Sunwing Kamala Beach (from around ฿4,000) is the family-value resort with the kids’ club and Thai families on the sand at weekends. Paresa Resort Phuket (from around ฿14,000) is the cliff-edge villa hotel at the northern end, infinity pools over the sea, for the anniversary rather than the third date.
Surin, Bang Tao and Laguna: Twinpalms Surin Beach Phuket (from around ฿6,500) is the grown-up base a short walk behind the best sand on the coast. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket (from around ฿6,500) is the beachfront resort that best justifies the Laguna estate, on the free shuttle boat; the estate’s apartment-hotels and Cherng Talay’s co-living blocks are the month-stay alternatives.
The luxury tier: Amanpuri (from around ฿40,000) on Pansea Beach is the 1988 original every Aman since has copied; the trade guides say it spent part of 2026 closed for a refurbishment, so read the newest reviews. Trisara Villas & Residences Phuket (from around ฿32,000) has a private bay below Nai Thon and PRU, the island’s best restaurant, in the garden. Rosewood Phuket (from around ฿25,000) has 600 metres of Emerald Bay to itself past Patong’s southern headland. Banyan Tree Phuket (from around ฿15,000) is the lagoon-villa estate at Laguna with the golf course and the spa. Keemala (from around ฿18,000, nearer ฿25,000 all-in over Christmas) is the treehouse-and-clay-cottage fantasy above Kamala, with the widest seasonal swing in Thai luxury. Anantara Layan Phuket Resort (from around ฿18,000) sits on the wild northern end of Bang Tao with a beach that feels like nobody’s. Our Thailand Price Index says what “expensive” means everywhere else on the island.
Nai Harn and Rawai: The Nai Harn (from around ฿9,000) is the one hotel on the bay and the best-placed hotel on Phuket. Serenity Resort & Residences Phuket (from around ฿3,500) in Rawai is the sensible mid-range for a week or a month.
Old Town: The Memory at On On Hotel (from around ฿1,500) is the 1929 shophouse hotel from the film of The Beach, restored rather than themed. The Neighbors Hostel (dorms from around ฿450) has the rooftop bar and the tours; bloo Hostel (dorms from around ฿550) has pod beds and a desk to work at. Rooms in the quarter are half the price of a comparable beach room; the case for two nights is in our Phuket Old Town guide.
Mai Khao and Nai Yang: JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa (from around ฿9,000) is the family resort on Mai Khao with the turtle programme and a pool complex that makes the undertow irrelevant. SALA Phuket Mai Khao Beach Resort (from around ฿8,000) is the walled pool villas with outdoor tubs, for adults. Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas (from around ฿16,000) is the lagoon-villa version fifteen minutes from the plane. The Slate Phuket (from around ฿6,000) on Nai Yang is the tin-mine-themed design resort beside the village beach, the one place up here you can walk to grilled fish under a casuarina.
Cape Panwa: Sri Panwa Phuket Luxury Pool Villa Hotel (from around ฿18,000) has the pool villas on the point and the rooftop bar the island’s money drinks at. Cape Panwa Hotel (from around ฿4,000) is the 1980s grande dame with its own beach, a funicular down to it and honest prices. V Villas Phuket – MGallery (from around ฿12,000) is the small hillside retreat with private infinity pools over Ao Yon bay. The Phi Phi ferries leave from Rassada pier ten minutes away — tickets on Phuket to Phi Phi on 12Go, verdict in is Koh Phi Phi worth it.
Honest warnings before you book
The monsoon is real, and Karon drowns people. From May to October the west coast takes the Andaman swell head on: red flags at Karon, Surin, Kamala and Nai Harn on more days than not, and rips that pull swimmers out — not under — past the sandbar. Rooms are 30–40% cheaper and the sea is not always swimmable; Kata’s south end and Nai Yang’s reef are where it stays usable. Book by month with our best time to visit Thailand guide.
Patong: the noise, the jet skis and the boards. As of October 2026 Bangla’s licensed clubs run until 4am and the beach-road touts start at breakfast. Rent nothing with an engine: the jet-ski damage scam — a scratch that was there when you left, a bill of ฿20,000–50,000, a friendly policeman mediating — is the island’s oldest hustle. Tuk-tuk boards quote ฿400–500 for the five kilometres to Karon that Grab does for ฿150–250; the scripts are in our Thailand scams guide.
The map is the bill. Nothing in Bang Tao, Kamala, Nai Harn or Rawai is walkable, so budget ฿150–500 a Grab hop several times a day or a car at ฿900–1,500 a day; a scooter is ฿250–350, but the hills fill the clinics, and without a motorcycle licence your insurer accepts you pay that bill yourself. Get the apps working at the kerb with our SIM and eSIM guide, and pre-book the first transfer — Phuket airport to Patong on 12Go costs about what the meter does, without the queue.
Peak weeks and the plus-plus. Christmas to New Year and Chinese New Year (February 2027) add 20–50% and sell out the good resorts months ahead, and luxury rates quoted “++” grow 17% at checkout. The Vegetarian Festival, 10 to 18 October 2026, books out Old Town’s shophouse hotels and fills the streets with firecrackers from dawn — brilliant to watch, hopeless to sleep through; dates in our Thailand festivals and public holidays calendar, etiquette in our Phuket Vegetarian Festival guide.
Refurbishments and rebrands. Phuket’s hotel stock is thirty years old in places and being rebuilt in public: Le Méridien Karon is mid-refurbishment, the Novotel Karon became a Holiday Inn, Amanpuri has been renewing pavilions. Sort the reviews by newest before you pay for anything over ฿5,000, and if a listing’s photographs are all lobby and no room, keep scrolling.

Phuket stays: your questions, answered
Which is the best area to stay in Phuket?
Kata for most people: a protected bay, a walkable town, lifeguards, the Smart Bus and no Bangla Road, at mid-range rates of ฿2,000–3,500 in cool season. Karon suits families who want space, Kamala and Bang Tao suit resort weeks with a car, Old Town wins for food, and Nai Harn or Rawai for long stays.
Is Patong or Kata better?
Kata, unless nightlife is the reason you came. Patong has the bars, the malls, the boxing stadium and the touts, and its sand is shared with jet skis from 10am; Kata has a calmer bay, a smaller town and evenings that end around midnight. If you want both, sleep on Patong’s southern headland at the Amari and Grab over the hill.
How much does a hotel in Phuket cost per night?
In cool season a hostel bed is ฿300–550, an inland double ฿1,300–2,000, a mid-range room near a beach ฿2,000–4,500, a beachfront resort ฿4,500–9,000 and the villa tier ฿15,000–40,000 before the 17% tax and service on luxury rates. May to October takes 30–40% off; Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year add 20–50%.
Where can I stay in Phuket without a car or scooter?
Kata, Karon, Patong and Old Town, in that order. All four have a walkable strip, the ฿100 Smart Bus along the coast and Grab or Bolt for the rest. Kamala, Bang Tao, Nai Harn, Rawai, Mai Khao and Cape Panwa are resort or village areas where dinner outside the hotel means wheels or a ฿150–500 Grab each way.
Where should families stay in Phuket?
Kata’s southern corner for small children, Karon for space and the two big water-park resorts, Kamala for a Thai village with a kids’ club, and Mai Khao for a villa-resort week by the pool. Between May and October choose Kata or Nai Yang, where the water stays swimmable, and treat a red flag anywhere as a closed beach.
