Koh Samui is the island with its own airport, which is both the good news and the whole problem: the one airline that flies there from Bangkok knows it. Everyone else arrives the long way — a cheap flight to the mainland, a night train, or a coach and a catamaran — and the gap between the fast way and the cheap way is about ฿4,000 and ten hours. Here is every route costed for 2026, with the one we’d pick for each kind of trip.
The short answer: if money is no object, fly direct from Suvarnabhumi and be on Chaweng beach by lunch. If you’d rather spend the difference on three more nights, fly to Surat Thani from Don Mueang and take the bus-and-ferry joint ticket — it’s the route most Thais use. The night train is the romantic version and the overnight coach-and-catamaran is the backpacker one, and both deliver you to the pier before most hotels serve breakfast.
Bangkok to Koh Samui: your options compared
One-way, one adult, August 2026 fares; door-to-door times assume you start in central Bangkok and end at your Samui hotel. Fares move with season and how early you book — treat them as a compass.

Flying direct to Samui: fast, and priced like it
Samui’s airport is one of the prettiest in the world — open-sided pavilions, frangipani, a fifteen-minute drive to Chaweng — and it is privately owned by Bangkok Airways, which is why Bangkok Airways has the Bangkok route almost to itself. Flights leave Suvarnabhumi (BKK) roughly hourly through the day and take about 65 minutes; fares start around ฿3,000 one way if you book weeks ahead and routinely run ฿4,500–6,000 in December–February and July–August. The price includes the airport, in effect: there is no low-cost carrier on this route and no Don Mueang option. Add a ฿300–500 taxi or minivan at the Samui end. Verdict: for a week or less, or with children, or when you’ve already paid long-haul fares to get to Thailand, it’s the right call — a ฿3,000 premium to save seven hours each way is cheaper than the hotel nights you’d otherwise burn in transit. Fly to Surat Thani, then bus and ferry: the value play
This is the route Thai families take and the one we’d book. AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion fly Don Mueang (DMK) to Surat Thani (URT), and Thai VietJet flies the same route from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — several departures a day between them for ฿900–2,000, about 70 minutes. At the airport, the ferry companies sell joint tickets — bus to Donsak pier plus the crossing — for roughly ฿450–600, and a bus meets each flight. Donsak is about 90 minutes from the airport; the ferry is 90 minutes (Seatran and Raja car ferries) or a little less on a catamaran. You step off at Nathon or Lipa Noi on Samui’s west coast by early afternoon if you caught a morning flight, with ฿3,000 still in your pocket compared with flying direct. In high season book both legs ahead — the Don Mueang–Surat Thani flight and the Surat Thani–Koh Samui bus-and-ferry ticket are both on 12Go, and the morning combinations sell out first.
Two things to know. First, “Surat Thani airport” is a long way from “Surat Thani” — don’t book a town hotel thinking you’ll pop to the pier; the joint ticket is the point. Second, the afternoon flights work too, but aim to be on a ferry before 5pm; the last sailings are early evening and a missed one means a night in Donsak, which nobody has ever planned. The overnight train plus ferry: slower, cheaper, nicer
Sleeper trains leave Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat station in the late afternoon and evening and reach Surat Thani — actually Phun Phin, 15 km west of town — between about 4am and 9am depending on the service. A second-class air-conditioned sleeper berth runs roughly ฿800–1,000 (lower berths cost more and are worth it); first-class two-berth cabins ฿1,500–1,800 per person. At Phun Phin, ferry-company vans sell the same joint tickets — van to Donsak plus crossing, ฿400–500 — and you’re on Samui by lunchtime. The whole thing costs ฿1,200–1,900 and saves a hotel night, which is why it’s been the budget-romantic’s choice for forty years.
Verdict: the best way to do it if you have the time and like trains — you wake up in the palm-and-limestone south with the morning light on the rice. Book early in high season; the lower berths go first — sleeper berths to Surat Thani are on 12Go (the State Railway’s own site works too, but it fights foreign cards). Coach and catamaran joint tickets: the backpacker classic and the Koh Tao route
Lomprayah runs coaches from the Khao San area to Chumphon (about 7–8 hours), where its high-speed catamaran continues down the islands — Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, then Samui — for around ฿1,100–1,500 all in, roughly 12–14 hours. Morning departures arrive late afternoon; the overnight coach has you on the boat at dawn and on Samui by mid-morning. Seatran Discovery sells a similar Bangkok–Samui package via Surat Thani and Bangrak pier. If your trip is the full Gulf run — diving on Tao, a week on Phangan, then Samui — this is the ticket that makes the geography work in one direction. Lomprayah and Seatran joint tickets are bookable on 12Go — pick the departure by where you want to wake up.
Verdict: cheapest comfortable way, and genuinely convenient if Koh Tao is on the list (our Koh Tao diving guide will probably put it there). The honest cost is sleep and, in the rough months, a lively catamaran crossing — see the seasons note below.
Driving to Samui: only if you’re touring the south
It’s about 650 km to Donsak pier — 10 to 11 hours on Highway 4 and 41 with stops — then Raja Ferry or Seatran takes cars across to Lipa Noi for around ฿700 including the driver, plus a small fare per passenger. Worth it only if the car is part of a longer southern loop (Khao Sok, Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat); for Samui alone, renting a scooter or car on the island beats driving one there.
Booking it: seasons, piers and the mistakes that cost a day
Samui’s weather clock is different. The Gulf’s wet season is October to early December — the opposite of Phuket’s — and while big car ferries sail through almost anything, catamarans can be cancelled or made memorable in rough weeks. If you’re crossing in November, pick the car ferry or the direct flight. Know your pier: Nathon and Lipa Noi (west coast, 30–45 minutes to Chaweng) for the Surat Thani ferries; Bangrak and Maenam (north coast, 15–20 minutes to Chaweng) for Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery — it changes which hotel transfer you need. Arrive in daylight your first time; finding a Bophut lane at 11pm with a rucksack is avoidable. Joint tickets beat DIY at both Surat Thani airport and Phun Phin — the bus meets the plane or train and the price is fixed, where the freelance van at the kerb is not. What is the cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
The coach-and-catamaran joint ticket (around ฿1,100–1,500) or the second-class night train plus ferry (around ฿1,200–1,600). Flying to Surat Thani and taking the bus-ferry ticket is only a few hundred baht more and saves most of a day — it’s the best value for almost everyone.
How long does it take to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
About 65 minutes in the air and 3–4 hours door to door if you fly direct; 6–7 hours via a Surat Thani flight; 12–14 hours by coach and boat; 15–17 hours by night train and ferry, most of it asleep.
Is there a train to Koh Samui?
Not to the island — there’s no bridge. The train runs to Surat Thani (Phun Phin station) and every ferry company sells a van-plus-ferry ticket from the platform that gets you to Samui in three to four more hours.
Should I fly from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang?
Direct flights to Samui leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) only. The cheap flights to Surat Thani mostly leave from Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok’s low-cost airport on the north side of the city — allow an hour to get there and don’t book a Don Mueang flight that connects from a Suvarnabhumi arrival with less than four hours between them.
