Most people book Phuket on the strength of two names. The version of the question they actually type — where to stay in Phuket Patong or Kata — assumes a two-horse race, and it isn’t. Five west-coast bases and two wildcards make seven different holidays. Patong is a nightlife district with a beach attached. Kata is the family bay that turns into a surf beach in the monsoon. Karon is Kata with more sand and the island’s worst rip. Kamala is a Thai village that goes to bed early. Bang Tao is six kilometres of resort strip you cannot walk. Nai Harn and Rawai are where the expats went. Old Town has no beach and the best food on the island.
This is a decision page, not a hotel list; the room-by-room detail is in our where to stay in Phuket guide and the sand is rated in Phuket beaches, ranked honestly. Nothing was comped. The short version: first-timers and families go to Kata, nightlife to Patong, couples with money to Bang Tao or the Kamala hills, nomads to Rawai or Cherng Talay, food-first travellers to Old Town, and Karon suits anyone who wants space and will obey a red flag.
The decision table, the map and the Grab-or-scooter question
| You are… | Go to | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A first-timer who wants to walk everywhere | Kata, or the south end of Karon | Bang Tao, Kamala |
| Here for the bars | Patong, within a stagger of Bangla | Everywhere else |
| A family with under-tens | Kata’s southern corner, then Kamala | Karon in the monsoon, central Patong |
| A couple who plans the trip around dinner | Old Town, then Kata Noi or Bang Tao | Patong |
| On a resort-and-pool week | Bang Tao (Laguna) or the Kamala hills | Anywhere you would have to walk |
| A nomad or a long-stayer | Rawai and Nai Harn, or Cherng Talay | Patong |
The map explains the prices. The airport sits at the top of the island and nothing you want is nearer than 25 minutes: as of October 2026 a metered taxi is around ฿450–550 to Bang Tao, ฿700–800 to Patong, ฿800–950 to Kata or Karon, ฿650–750 to Old Town and ฿950–1,100 to Nai Harn — our Phuket airport arrival guide has the counters — and a pre-booked car on 12Go’s airport-to-Patong page costs about the same. The Phuket Smart Bus does the airport-to-Rawai coast for a flat ฿100, roughly hourly. Between bases it is Grab or Bolt — Patong to Karon ฿150–250, to Old Town ฿350–500, to Bang Tao ฿400–550 — or a scooter at ฿250–350 a day. The Patong–Karon hill and the Kamala road keep the hospitals busy; without a motorcycle licence your insurer accepts, choose a base you can walk.
Patong: the noise, the touts and the one end worth sleeping in
Best for the bars, groups, and anyone who wants a mall, a night market and a boxing stadium within a ten-minute walk of bed. Skip unless nightlife is the point; light sleepers, families and couples do better anywhere else (see things to do in Phuket that aren’t Bangla Road). The beach, honestly: three kilometres of decent sand and better dry-season swimming than its reputation, shared from 10am with jet skis and the jet-ski damage scam — rent nothing with an engine here (the scams guide has the script). Touts work the beach road, and as of October 2026 Bangla’s licensed clubs run until 4am. The ฿ level: pad thai ฿120–200 on the beach road and ฿60–80 in Banzaan market (the night markets guide rates the rest), a large Chang ฿100–150, mid-range rooms ฿2,500–4,500 in the cool season. Sleep on the southern headland: Amari Phuket (from around ฿6,500) has a path to the calm end and a hill between you and the bass; Burasari Phuket (from around ฿3,500) is the well-run mid-range a few hundred metres from Bangla, exactly the right distance. Airport 45–60 minutes; Karon 10–15 over the hill.

Kata and Kata Noi: the first-timer’s default and the swimmer’s beach
Best for first-timers, families, couples who want a walkable town without Patong, and beginner surfers from May to October. Skip unless you can live without a scene after midnight. The beach, honestly: a 1.5-kilometre curve with a protected southern corner where toddlers can stand, a lifeguard patrol and loungers around ฿100–200. From May to October the swell makes it Phuket’s surf beach and the northern rocks are a documented rip. Kata Noi, over the southern headland, is the best dry-season swim on the island: steep, clear water, one large resort, nowhere to park and nothing to do but swim. The ฿ level: pad thai ฿100–160 in the restaurants and ฿60–100 at the night-market stalls, a large Chang ฿90–140, mid-range rooms ฿2,000–3,500 in the cool season. Sleep at Katathani Phuket Beach Resort (from around ฿5,500), which owns most of Kata Noi and earns its price, or The Boathouse Phuket (from around ฿7,000) at Kata’s southern end, the old-school beachfront pick for couples. Airport 60–70 minutes; Karon 5–10; Nai Harn 20.

Karon: three kilometres of sand and the worst rip on the island
Best for families who want room and a dune to sit behind, budget travellers (20% under Kata’s prices), and dry-season resort weeks. Skip unless you will obey a red flag without arguing. The beach, honestly: long, squeaky and wide, with a shelf so steep that Karon records drownings most years; from May to October the flags fly more days than not, and the lifeguards mean it. From November to April it is a spacious, well-run family beach with loungers around ฿100–200. The ฿ level: the Karon temple market on Tuesday and Friday evenings at ฿40–80 a plate, a large Chang ฿100–150, nothing after midnight, mid-range rooms ฿1,800–3,200. Sleep at Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Karon Beach (from around ฿4,500), whose water park and kids’ club make it the family default, or Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket (from around ฿6,500) at the southern end, with bigger slides. Airport 60–70 minutes; Patong 10–15 over the hill; Kata on foot.
Kamala: the Thai village that goes to bed early
Best for families who want Thai neighbours and weekend picnics on the sand, couples spending honeymoon money in the hills, and anyone over 40 who wants a beach club rather than a club. Skip unless you have wheels and an early bedtime. The beach, honestly: a two-kilometre bay with a proper village behind it and Thai families at the weekend; the southern end is the calmer swim, the north grows a monsoon rip; loungers around ฿100–150, and nobody sells you a jet ski. The nightlife is the honest warning: Café del Mar is the one place the music runs past 11pm; Kamala is quiet in the cool season and close to dead from May to October, when the beach road empties by 10pm. The ฿ level: a large Chang ฿90–140, pad thai ฿90–150, mid-range rooms ฿2,000–3,500. Sleep at Sunwing Kamala Beach (from around ฿4,000), the family-value resort with a kids’ club, or Keemala (from around ฿18,000), tree-house villas in the jungle behind the village. Airport 35–45 minutes; Patong 15–20.
Bang Tao and Laguna: the resort strip you cannot walk
Best for resort weeks, golfers, couples with money, families who will live in the pool, and nomads — Cherng Talay behind the beach is the island’s laptop district. Skip unless you have transport and a budget; the spread is a cost in itself. The beach, honestly: six kilometres of flat, wide sand from the Laguna resorts north towards Layan, the most space on the island. The beach clubs in the middle run minimum-spend beds from around ฿1,000; walk 500 metres either way and the sand is free. Laguna’s resorts share a free shuttle bus and boat. The ฿ level: Boat Avenue in Cherng Talay has the cafés and supermarkets, none walkable from most rooms, so budget ฿150–300 a Grab hop several times a day; a large Chang ฿120–180 in the clubs; a mid-range room means ฿3,500–6,000. Sleep at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket (from around ฿6,500), the beachfront resort that best justifies the strip, or Cassia Phuket (from around ฿3,300), the apartment-hotel with kitchens that families and long-stayers actually use. Airport 25–35 minutes, the closest of the beach bases; Patong 20–25.

The wildcards: Nai Harn and Rawai in the far south, or Old Town
Nai Harn and Rawai are the far south, forty minutes and a different island from Patong. Nai Harn is the best all-round beach on Phuket — deep sand, lifeguards, no jet skis — with the island’s biggest surf from June to September; Rawai is a longtail pier and a seafood row, not a swim, where a stall grills your market prawns for around ฿100 a kilo. Best for long-stayers, second visits and DTV holders (our DTV guide); skip unless you have wheels, because the airport is 70–85 minutes and ฿950–1,100 away. The Nai Harn (from around ฿9,000) is the one hotel on the bay; Serenity Resort & Residences (from around ฿3,500) in Rawai is the sensible mid-range for a week or a month.
Old Town has no beach and the best food on the island, and for two nights of any Phuket trip it wins: shophouses on Thalang Road, the Sunday Lard Yai walking street from about 4pm to 10pm, hostel beds from around ฿300. The catch is that the beaches are a ฿30–50 songthaew away until dusk and a ฿350–500 Grab after it. Best for food-first travellers and anyone splitting the trip; skip unless you can spare the sea for two nights. The Memory at On On Hotel (from around ฿1,500) is the 1929 hotel from the film of The Beach; Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel (from around ฿2,000) is the tidier option. Airport 40–50 minutes on the ฿100 bus 8411.
Where to stay in Phuket by traveller type: the verdicts
Families with under-tens: Kata’s southern corner from November to April; Kamala for a quieter, more Thai beach; Karon for the water park, dry season only; never central Patong with a pram. Couples: the money answer is the Kamala hills or a Laguna pool villa; the better answer for most is two nights in Old Town for the food and four on Kata Noi for the swim. Patong is where couples go to argue. Nightlife: Patong, and stay in it rather than near it. Nomads: Rawai and Nai Harn for cheap living and a gym, Cherng Talay for the cafés and the airport; both need wheels and an eSIM sorted before you land (the SIM and eSIM guide). Budget with a beach: Karon in the dry season, Kata otherwise.
The first-timer default: four nights in Kata, one Sunday dinner in Old Town, one boat day in Phang Nga Bay, then leave. All of this assumes the dry season: from May to October the west-coast swim is a lottery and rooms drop by about a third, as our month-by-month guide explains. The Phuket province profile has the rest of the island.
What each Phuket base costs: a beer, a pad thai, a room
Cool-season figures, October 2026, cross-checked against our Thailand Price Index; Phuket’s west coast runs 20–40% above the mainland, and Christmas to mid-January adds another 30% to rooms.
| Base | Large Chang (bar) | Pad thai (stall / restaurant) | Mid-range room | Book |

| Kata / Kata Noi | ฿90–140 | ฿60–100 / ฿100–160 | ฿2,000–3,500 | Kata Rocks (the pool-villa splurge) |
| Karon | ฿100–150 | ฿60–80 / ฿100–160 | ฿1,800–3,200 | Holiday Inn Karon (above) |

Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala or Bang Tao: your questions, answered
Is Patong or Kata better for a first visit to Phuket?
Kata, for almost everyone: a swimmable bay with a calm southern corner, a walkable town, lifeguards, and rooms and dinners 20–30% cheaper than Patong’s. Patong wins only if Bangla Road is the point of the trip, in which case stay in the middle of it.
Where should families stay in Phuket?
Kata’s southern corner from November to April, at Katathani on Kata Noi or a resort on the main bay; Kamala at Sunwing for a quieter, more Thai beach with a kids’ club; Karon at the Holiday Inn for the water park, dry season only, because its rip currents are the island’s worst. Avoid central Patong with a pram.
Is Karon beach safe for swimming?
From November to April, yes, with lifeguards on duty and a shelf that gives a proper swim. From May to October, mostly no: the monsoon puts red flags on Karon more days than not, the steep shelf makes a rip within metres of the shore, and drownings are recorded most years. Treat a red flag as a closed sign.
Is Bang Tao worth it, or is it too spread out?
Worth it for a resort week where the room, the pool and the beach are the holiday, and for nomads based in Cherng Talay. Not worth it if you expect to walk to dinner: almost nothing in Bang Tao is walkable, so budget ฿150–300 a Grab hop several times a day, or a hire car at around ฿900–1,500 a day.
Do I need a scooter in Phuket?
Not in Kata, Karon, Patong or Old Town, where you can walk and the Smart Bus and Grab fill the gaps. In Kamala, Bang Tao, Nai Harn and Rawai you will want wheels, at ฿250–350 a day. Only ride with a motorcycle licence your insurer accepts, a helmet and no beer.
