The car ferry from Ao Thammachat drops you on a concrete ramp at the top of the island, and a man with a clipboard is asking which beach. That question is the whole holiday. Koh Chang has one road down its west coast and six beaches along it, each with its own crowd, price band and idea of a good evening. White Sand is bars and a 7-Eleven every 200 metres; Bang Bao is a fishing pier and a 10pm bedtime.
So this guide to where to stay in Koh Chang carves the island into its seven real areas — six west-coast beaches, north to south, plus the east coast for people who came to be left alone — and matches each to a traveller. The short version: Klong Prao or Kai Bae for most people — the widest sand and the resorts on one, the village, the viewpoint and the value on the other. White Sand Beach for first-timer convenience, Lonely Beach if you’re twenty-four, Bailan for its prices without its speakers, Bang Bao if the boats matter more than the beach, the east coast if the point is silence. How Koh Chang is laid out (and which beach to stay on)
The ferries from Ao Thammachat and Centrepoint land at the north end. The road climbs a headland, drops onto the west coast and runs south through every beach that matters before giving up at Bang Bao; it does not connect round the southern tip, so the east coast is a separate drive over the top. It is only 20-odd kilometres end to end, but with two hairpin climbs in the way you pick the beach you want to wake up on and don’t commute. North to south:
- Klong Son and Chang Noi — the north end before the beaches proper: a Thai village, a couple of villa estates on a quiet bay, nothing else.
- White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) — the busiest beach and the first you reach: hotels on the sand, a walkable drag of restaurants, bars and ATMs behind. Convenient, lively, and the least Koh Chang of anything on Koh Chang.
- Klong Prao — the widest and prettiest beach, split by a lagoon, with the better resorts spaced along it. Nothing walkable behind; songthaew out or stay in.
- Kai Bae — a proper village with a beach on the end: cheap food, a viewpoint, islets at sunset, and mid-priced hotels a third cheaper than Klong Prao. The sensible base.
- Lonely Beach — the backpacker beach, not lonely since about 2005. Rocky at the village end, sandy at the north end, the cheapest beds and the loudest nights.
- Bailan — one bay south and a world quieter: a small beach, a few resorts, one 7-Eleven, budget peace.
- Bang Bao — the stilt fishing village at the end of the road, built along a wooden pier where the snorkelling and dive boats leave. For boats and seafood, not swimming; the nearest real beach is Klong Kloi.
- The east coast (Salak Khok, Salak Phet) — mangroves, fishing hamlets, a couple of near-empty resorts, no beach. The island before the road.

Where to stay in Koh Chang by traveller type
First-timers and short stays: White Sand Beach, with Klong Prao as the grown-up alternative. On three nights you want to walk to dinner, find an ATM on foot and be first off for the ferry, and White Sand does all of that; the trade-off is the busiest sand on the island and a loud road behind it. Four nights or more, take Klong Prao.
Families: Klong Prao, or the northern half of Kai Bae. Klong Prao’s beach is wide, shelving and calm from November to April, the resorts have the pools and kids’ clubs, and the lagoon is a kayak playground. Kai Bae has fewer pools and more village, for children old enough to be bored by a resort.
Couples: Kai Bae, for the viewpoint at sunset and because dinner for two is ฿500 rather than ฿1,500, or the southern end of Klong Prao if the budget stretches to a pool villa. Kai Bae’s beach vanishes at high tide on the village end, so book the wider northern stretch or the headlands south.
Budget and backpackers: Lonely Beach for the scene, Bailan for the price without it. Lonely Beach has dorms from ฿300, fan bungalows from ฿600, bars on the sand and the only nights that run past midnight; the better cheap resorts sit on the sandy north end. Luxury: Klong Prao, plus one headland on Kai Bae. The top end is thinner than Samui’s, but the best pool villas run ฿6,500–9,000 in cool season for what costs ฿15,000 on the Gulf, with emptier sand. How that compares with Phuket or Phang Nga is in our Thailand luxury hotel price guide.
The anti-social, and the boat people: the east coast for the first, Bang Bao for the second. Salak Khok and Salak Phet have mangrove channels, stilt hamlets, a resort or two with a dozen rooms and no beach, which is the point — you kayak, you read, you drive 40 minutes over the hill for a menu in English. Bang Bao is for divers and snorkellers who want to walk to the boat at 8am: stilt guesthouses on the pier, bay-side resorts with the views the pier lacks.
The hotels we’d actually shortlist, beach by beach
Cool-season (November to April) “from” rates for a standard double, rounded, as of September 2026; expect 30–40% less May to October and 20–50% more over Christmas and Thai long weekends. Every name was checked against the live Agoda listing; the links are affiliate links, disclosed at the foot. Nothing was comped.
White Sand Beach: KC Grande Resort (from around ฿3,000) is the beach’s landmark, a big beachfront resort with the pool on the sand — ask for the beach wing unless you like stairs. Kacha Resort & Spa (from around ฿2,500) is the quieter beachfront pick at the northern end where the strip fades out. On the strip without the resort bill, Cookies Hotel (from around ฿1,200) is plain, clean and twenty years reliable.
Klong Prao: The Emerald Cove Koh Chang (from around ฿3,500) is the big one — long pool, beachfront lawn, a breakfast that feeds a family. The Dewa Koh Chang (from around ฿3,000) is the boutique pick, dark wood and a black-tiled pool, better for couples. Centara Koh Chang Tropicana (from around ฿2,800) is the family workhorse with the kids’ club; Barali Beach Resort (from around ฿4,000) the smaller, calmer, mostly-adults option. The honest bargain is Koh Chang Paradise Resort (from around ฿2,000): older bungalows, a great position, nothing fancy.
The luxury tier: Santhiya Koh Chang Resort (from around ฿6,500; listed until recently as Santhiya Tree) at the southern end of Klong Prao is the island’s best-known top-end stay, carved teak and pool villas on a private beach, Samui prices in the restaurant. SYLVAN Koh Chang (from around ฿7,000) is the newer, quieter answer on a Kai Bae headland, a handful of private pool villas you never leave. AANA Resort & Villas (from around ฿3,000) is the affordable version, estuary villas with a longtail shuttle to the beach. Kai Bae: GajaPuri Resort (from around ฿3,500) is the beach’s standout, teak villas on the sand and a pool facing the islets. The Chill Resort & Spa (from around ฿3,000) is the modern neighbour. Awa Resort (from around ฿2,500) has the infinity pool over the sea, and Kaibae Hut Resort (from around ฿1,200) is the old-school bungalow place — book the seafront huts, not the garden rooms by the road.
Lonely Beach and Bailan: on the sandy northern end of Lonely Beach, Siam Beach Resort (from around ฿1,300) has the best position and rooms that vary wildly; read the newest reviews first. Warapura Resort (from around ฿1,500) is the grown-up pick at the quiet southern end, a small pool over the rocks and no speakers. On Bailan, Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway (from around ฿3,500) has a cove to itself and sea-view villas up a steep hillside; the beach’s fan bungalows are ฿600–1,000.
Bang Bao and the east coast: Bang Bao Cliff View Resort (from around ฿1,200) is the value way to sleep over the bay, rooms on the rocks above the water, the pier five minutes away; guesthouses on the pier itself are ฿600–1,000, cash, on arrival. On the east side, The Spa Koh Chang Resort (from around ฿1,800) at Salak Khok is the retreat — mangroves out front, nobody within a kilometre. Up north near Klong Son, Little Sunshine Boutique Beach Resort (from around ฿2,500) is the small bay-side stay for people who want the ferry near and the bars far away.
Honest warnings before you book
The road, on a scooter. Two short, brutally steep hairpin climbs — south of Kai Bae, and dropping into Lonely Beach — with sand on the bends and a clinic that sees the results daily. If you don’t ride at home, don’t start here: songthaews are ฿50–150 a hop, a car ฿1,200–1,500 a day.
Low season is real. From mid-May to October the west coast takes the swell straight on: surf, debris on the sand, red flags, cancelled boats. Some resorts and most Lonely Beach bars shut for June and September; rooms are 30–40% cheaper and the waterfalls are at full volume — a different trip, not a bad one; the month-by-month picture is in our best time to visit Thailand guide.
The ferry dictates your day. Car ferries cross from Ao Thammachat roughly every 45 minutes to an hour from about 6am to 7pm, from Centrepoint about hourly, 30–45 minutes at ฿80 a head; as of September 2026 there is no night crossing, so a late bus means a night in Trat. Through-tickets are the fix: compare Bangkok to Koh Chang on 12Go, or the Suvarnabhumi Airport to Koh Chang minivans off a flight (see our Suvarnabhumi arrival guide); from the coast, Pattaya to Koh Chang is about four hours.
Cash, and where there isn’t any. ATMs line White Sand, Klong Prao’s road, Kai Bae and Lonely Beach, all charging the ฿220 foreign-card fee. Bailan has one on a good day, Bang Bao’s are unreliable and its boats are cash only, and the east coast has none. Carry cash south and east from Kai Bae.
Weekends, sandflies and pier touts. Bangkok arrives on Friday night; book Saturdays ahead and expect ferry queues on Thai long weekends. Sandflies bite at dusk on Klong Prao’s southern end and Bailan; repellent on the ankles. Klong Prao for the widest beach and the best resorts, Kai Bae for the village, the viewpoint and the value; between them they suit most people. White Sand Beach is the convenient first-timer’s pick, Lonely Beach the party, Bailan, Bang Bao or the east coast the quiet options.
Is White Sand Beach or Klong Prao better?
White Sand Beach is the liveliest, most walkable and most convenient — restaurants, bars and ATMs behind the sand — and the busiest and least island-like. Klong Prao is wider, calmer and prettier, with resorts spaced along it and nothing to walk to; two or three nights, take White Sand, longer, take Klong Prao.
How much does a hotel on Koh Chang cost?
In cool season a fan bungalow is ฿600–1,000, a mid-range air-conditioned room ฿1,500–2,500, a beachfront resort ฿3,000–4,000 and the pool villas ฿6,500–9,000. May to October knock 30–40% off; Christmas, New Year and Thai long weekends add 20–50%. Dorm beds on Lonely Beach are ฿300–400 year round.
Where should backpackers stay on Koh Chang?
Lonely Beach, which has the dorms, the cheapest bungalows and the only real nightlife, on a mostly rocky shore with a sandy north end. For the price without the sound system, Bailan is one bay south with the same rates. Kai Bae is the compromise, with ฿1,200 beachfront huts and cheap village food.
Is it worth staying on the east coast of Koh Chang?
Only if solitude is the point. Salak Khok and Salak Phet have mangroves to kayak, stilt fishing villages, a couple of small resorts and no swimming beach, and every west-coast beach is 40 minutes away over a steep road. For a few nights of reading and paddling it’s the most Thai corner of the island; for a beach holiday, stay west.
