About Pathum Thani
History
Pathum Thani — literally "city of lotuses" — was founded in 1815 to settle Mon refugees fleeing the fall of Pegu, who brought their distinctive temple architecture: steeply stepped roofs, Mon-script inscriptions, and floating alms-ceremony traditions still observed in river festivals today. The twentieth century brought rapid industrialisation — major universities, the Thailand Science Research and Innovation Park at Khlong Luang, and vast shopping complexes — as Bangkok's suburban sprawl expanded northward along the Chao Phraya and rail corridors.
Landscape & geography
Flat Chao Phraya flood plain immediately north of Bangkok, pan-flat and criss-crossed by irrigation canals whose lotus-pond remnants gave the province its name. Rice paddies alternate with university campuses, light-industrial estates, and unbroken commuter-suburb expansion. Don Mueang International Airport lies within the province's northern bounds, linking Pathum Thani directly to low-cost routes across the region.
Why visit
DreamWorld and Siam Park City offer family waterslides and roller coasters popular with Bangkok day-trippers. Future Park Rangsit is one of the region's largest malls. The more rewarding experiences are gentler — Mon-community temples along the Chao Phraya where cool-season boat processions follow eighteenth-century tradition, and Rangsit's canal-side morning markets where produce arrives by boat. Wat Chedi Thong's golden Mon-style stupa, visible from the expressway, is an underrated architectural gem.
