About Chaiyaphum
History
Chaiyaphum's origin story centres on Phraya Phakdi Chumphon, a Laotian nobleman who switched allegiance from the Vientiane rebels to the Siamese crown in 1826 and was executed by the Laotian king for his loyalty — later rehabilitated as the province's founding spirit. A bronze statue and an annual March festival commemorate him in the provincial capital. The province was historically cattle-grazing and salt-lick territory along the western edge of the Khorat Plateau, its forested ridges forming a natural divide between the Isan plateau and the central basin.
Landscape & geography
The province marks the westernmost shelf of the Khorat Plateau, where the Dong Phaya Yen escarpment divides Isan from the central basin. Phu Laen Kha, Pa Hin Ngam, and Sai Thong national parks occupy the ridge system, with broadleaf forest, rock gardens, and open grassland plateaus above 1,000 metres. A carpet of pink Siam tulips (Patumma) blooms across the Pa Hin Ngam plateau in June and July for five to six weeks, turning the grassland a vivid pink. Salt licks in the lowland forests attract gaur and elephant throughout the year.
Why visit
The Siam tulip fields at Pa Hin Ngam national park are the province's most photogenic draw — arrive in early July for peak bloom, when the pink flowers carpet the open grassland plateau. The bizarre rock garden formations of Pha Nok Khao — wind-eroded sandstone pillars and arches — are a short hike from the visitor centre. Prasat Hin Ban Samor, a small but atmospheric Khmer sanctuary in the southern lowlands, adds a historical dimension. Chaiyaphum works well as a two-night off-the-trail stop between Khon Kaen and Korat.
