About Loei

History

Loei occupies one of the most isolated corners of Thailand, where the Phetchabun and Loei mountain ranges crowd out the Khorat Plateau from the west and the Mekong marks the Lao border to the north. The province was historically a trade corridor linking northern Siam with Vientiane — salt, cattle, and forest products moved along its river valleys for centuries. The Dan Sai community on the Loei River is home to Phi Ta Khon, Thailand's most theatrically surreal festival: each June, villagers in enormous papier-mâché ghost masks and patchwork robes enact a Buddhist legend in a procession that is equal parts animist ritual, sacred drama, and joyful carnival.

Landscape & geography

Loei is Thailand's coolest province and the only one where frost has been recorded at valley level. Two table-mountain plateaus define its high ground: Phu Kradueng, whose sandstone escarpment rises to 1,320 metres and supports a temperate ecosystem of pine forest, wild orchids, and high-altitude grassland above the tree-line; and Phu Reua, a gentler plateau at 1,365 metres where the cold-season nights dip below ten degrees. The Loei River runs north through the valley floor to join the Mekong at Chiang Khan, which retains a string of teak shophouses along a riverfront promenade directly facing Laos.

Why visit

Phi Ta Khon in June is unmissable for anyone with a taste for folk-religious spectacle: the ghost-mask processions and rocket launches at Dan Sai draw visitors from across Thailand and a growing number from abroad. Chiang Khan's riverfront is Loei's most visited destination in cool season — a string of wooden shophouse cafés and guesthouses facing Lao mountains across a wide, slow Mekong. Phu Kradueng's two-day summit trek, through pine forest and onto the plateau where sunrises unfold over a sea of cloud, is one of the classic walks in the Thai highlands. GranMonte Estate near Phu Reua produces Thailand's most awarded wine from Syrah, Viognier, and Chenin Blanc vines.
