About Maha Sarakham
History
Maha Sarakham is sometimes called the "Taxila of Isan" — a reference to the ancient seat of learning in present-day Pakistan — because two major universities and several teacher-training colleges have made the provincial capital a hub of regional scholarship since the twentieth century. But the province's deeper heritage is Dvaravati-period Buddhist: the Na Dun district holds the ruins and museum of an ancient urban settlement already producing elaborate bronze Buddhist artefacts when Angkor was still a rice field. Khmer-period prangs at Ku Santarat and Ku Nong Saeng predate the Thai administrative era by several centuries.
Landscape & geography
The province sits at the geographic centre of the Khorat Plateau, a flat rice and cassava plain drained by the Chi River and its tributaries. Maha Sarakham town is bisected by the Chi, whose broad, slow bend defines the urban waterfront and provides a freshwater corridor for migratory birds through the cool season. Salt outcrops at Kut Thing district give the soil a characteristic pinkish tinge and produce the mineral-rich rock salt that is a signature ingredient of Isan cooking. The landscape is agricultural and almost entirely horizontal, with rice-stubble fields stretching to a low horizon in every direction after the October harvest.
Why visit
Na Dun is the province's most rewarding destination — the archaeological museum holds a superb collection of Dvaravati bronzes, terracotta votive tablets, and bone relics from an eighth-century urban site, presented in an airy building that is rarely crowded. The Ku Santarat Khmer prang is Maha Sarakham's most photogenic ruin — a single red-laterite tower in a quiet rice-field setting, unencumbered by souvenir stalls. Borabue district is the silk heartland, where mat-mi ikat weaving is done on hand looms in roadside workshops and cloth sells at market price. A useful overnight between Khon Kaen and Roi Et.
