Understanding Thailand’s Visa Categories

Visa-Free Entry

Citizens of 60+ countries can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism. Stays are typically 30 days, with some countries receiving 60 or 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

Citizens of certain countries can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at designated Thai international airports and border checkpoints. The fee is 2,000 THB and the stay is 15 days.

  • Available at major airports & land borders
  • Fee: 2,000 THB (cash only)
  • Must have passport photo + documents
  • Not extendable — must depart within 15 days

Thailand eVisa (TREV)

Thailand’s electronic visa system allows tourists from eligible countries to apply online before arrival. The tourist eVisa (TR) allows a 60-day stay and can be single or multiple entry.

  • Apply at thaievisa.go.th
  • Processing: 3–5 business days
  • Fee: USD 35 (single entry)
  • Extendable for 30 more days at Immigration

Visa Required

Citizens of some countries must apply for a Thai tourist visa (TR visa) at a Thai Embassy or Consulate in advance. Single-entry visas allow a 60-day stay.

  • Apply at Thai Embassy/Consulate in your country
  • Allow 3–10 business days processing
  • Required documents: photos, bank statements, travel itinerary
  • Multiple-entry visas available for frequent visitors

📌 Good to know

Thailand Pass
No longer required — the Thailand Pass registration system was discontinued in 2022.
Overstay fines
Overstaying your visa is serious. Fines start at 500 THB/day, up to 20,000 THB max, plus a possible ban.
Extensions
Most visa types can be extended once at any Thai Immigration office for 1,900 THB.
